I attempted to apply a decal (the round one that says “440 Magnum”) to the air cleaner of my Revell Dodge Charger kit. The decal is, of course, flat. However the top of the air cleaner is in the shape of a cone, with a raised center at the apex of the cone and the base of the cone on the inside of the raised rim. The decal is supposed to have its edge on the inside of the rim, and is supposed to lie on the resulting cone-shaped surface. I tried Testor’s Decal set and it didn’t help. How do you make the decal conform to this part’s shape without ruining it?
Soaking the decals in very hot water will help it to conform to surface contours when applying it and of course some Microsol or any other decal setting solution should help. Sometimes, it takes several applications of the setting solution to get good results but sometimes, decals simply don’t want to set. I experienced that with Academy’s decals recently. Another trick is to brush some “Future” on the surface where the decal have to be installed. Right after applying the Future, lay the decal down and the Future should help bringing it down.
