Hey, after a long hiatus, I’ve decided to come back to plastic modeling. Right now, I’d like to know what I should start with that won’t be too hard. (No, not the snap-togethers! Not the snap-togethers!)
I’ve only built two models in the past of a Dauntless Dive Bomber, I think it was from Revell, but that was three years ago. Anyway, I was unsuccessful in the attempt, one of the wings snapped off halfway through construction.
Then there was the cheap F-14 kit from the National Smithsonian, boy did I have fun. I was getting the decals ready and like that I ripped them all when I put them onto the model. Unsteady hands, eek. Then one of the swing wings snapped off when my chair fell over on it.
So, bad history of plastic modeling, but ready to start a good future. So, anybody have any suggestions as to what I should start off with as a summer project? Oh, and what airbrush would be good that won’t break my piggy bank? Lots of questions for you guys here. [:D]
hello and welcome to fsm. if you are looking for a/c kits may i suggest hasegawa kits. they are a bit more pricey than revell but the quality is outstanding. tamiya is also a good company to buy a/c kits from. you will get a lot of bang for your buck with them.
btw did you by chance go to hs in wisconsin. i think i graduated with a peter nguyen in 1986.
There are alot of Nguyens in the world, unfortunately I’m not your friend from HS, I’m going to be a sophomore in high school in a few months.
Back to the topic at hand, I was thinking of building the PT-109 model from Revell as a starting point, but the 1/32 P-51 Mustang from Hasegawa looks good, just not sure if I have the experience to build it.
Welcome back to modeling (and the forum). As for gaining experience, nothing beats just jumping right into it (albiet nothing to complicated-I wouldn’t recommend a Fonderie Miniatures kit when starting back up[:p]). There are quite a few books on the subject if you want to read up on the basics. The main thing is to have fun. As you build more kits, experience will come. Forums as this are an invalueable tool for gaining knowledge as well.
Badger makes some decent entry level airbrushes that cost as low as $40 to $50.00 dollars ('prolly lower in some places), You can get them in a starter set that has most of what you need to get started.
Can’t help much with your questions on kits, sounds like you are into the wingy thingies so I’ll leave that to the more than capable members from the A/C forum.
I have a Paasche H A/B that does everything that I nned it to do and they’re fairly reasonable.
Welcome aboard, you mentioned the Pt-109 kit to start out with, and that struck a chord with me. That 1/72 pt boat kit was probably within the first five kits I did when I got back into the hobby back around 96’ or 97’[?] It was also one of my first airbrush projects too! Oh yes, I rember how that bright fire engine red paint ran down that hull for the first time![(-D]
It is actually a good beginner kit I must say, it’s an easy build, I only used two main colors for the topside and waterline, so it wasn’t too challenging. I think the airbrush I used was a badger 150 double action, which I still use. Good luck and welcome[:)]
Welcome to the asylum. Take your time and don’t let some early misshaps stop your from enjoying this hobby. It’s all about the build, not the finished product (IMHO).
Welcome to FSM and the forums, Peter. You might try some of the Hasegawa kits, as mentioned earlier. You may want to give some of the Testors offerings, as many are simply repackaged Hawk beginner kits. The old Monogram kits, in Revell guise, offer an opportunity to build modelling skills with minimal investment and modest effort. Don’t give up; just grab a kit and have at it.
