Hi all. I am a 56yo noob trom Tucson who is working/learning on getitng started. I used to build when much younger but things have changed some since then. Not interested in competing at all but having fun. I like to model aircraft 1/48 scale. Still learning which model brands are good now as I was a big Hasegawa fan back in the day. Anyhow, collecting kits and equipment at the moment as I prepare to build away starting Christmas time.
Hi M33! Welcome to the Forums! Glad to have you aboard.
I started building in 1946 (6 years old) and never stopped. I build whatever strikes my fancy at the time and my wallet says OK.[;)] Favorites are WWI & WWII planes followed by Sailing Ships as you can see from my avatar. You’ve come to the right place. The members here are very knowledgeable and ready to help with any questions/problems. Be sure to check out all the other sections of this Forum as each one is for a certain section of the hobby, Planes, Ships, Autos etc…
I compete once in a while and I also restore models for a WWII museum. The eyes aren’t as good as they once were but I have a few optical aids to help out. The hands, well at 81 they aren’t as good as they were either. But with all the kits in the stash, I’ve got to keep plugging along at least for the next 100 years or until I get called to The Great Workbench In The Sky, whichever comes first.
Soooooo, sit back, relax, have a sip or two of your favorite brew whether it be [C], [B], [D], or my favorite [t$t] and build away. If you really want to get on the members good side, post lots of photos of your builds or post WIP’s (Works in Progress). That really keeps us happy plus it helps us see how your building is improving.

Welcome aboard,yea sure are a lot of changes in the hobby now.Hasegawa always had some nice stuff,now for aircraft Tamiya is coming out with some gems their F-14, F-16, and F-4 are state of the art as is the P-38. Also have a look at Airfix,Eduard,and Zouki-Mura

Thanks for your friendly replies! I am enjoying acquiring the basics at the moment. I did buy a few ‘practice’ models for pairing, etc. But ultimately I gotta get started once I get some time off during the holidays.
I will post pics of builds once I get more competent. YouTube has been my friend lately too!
Welcome aboard. Lots of 1/48 WWII fans here, myself included. I do 50% miliary aircraft (WWII - through current), 10% airliners and 40% cars plus the occasional oddball subject if it grabs my eye [:P]
I love Tucson. You have the whole Pima museum deal, plus all kinds of history.
My design firm did the Park Mall way out on Broadway.
Mission, the Desert Museum.
I used to stay at the Desert Inn and another place up in the hills that was a converted convent.
I found a hobby shop there, mostly railroad stuff but a good old fashion LHS.
Keep an open mind and try a range of models. Cazrs for instant don’t gt as much attention as they should compared to the popular stuff that seems to focus on conflict history. Or scifi.

I have to admit we were lucky and hit the lottery with the way our jobs landed. This is a great place to live and very outdoor oriented. We are never leaving!! Would like to keep it a secret so it doesn’t get ruined though…
The ‘main’ hobby shop here with models is the one that is attached to the Ace Hardware kind of by the airbase. They are well stocked and hoping to get all my paints and supplies there when I am in the neighborhood (it is an hour each way for me).
I am a aviation buff around wwii but still like some modern stuff. And actually the Russian fighters look good too. I also like subs and ships too but square footage for display would be an issue. I will still build a few I hope.
I am super impressed with what I see people building. Quality looks so good it is something to eventually aspire to hopefully.

Well, ordered my airbrush and compressor today. So I am pretty close to having everything ready to go over the holidays when I have time off.
Welcome, As a 69 year old who spends about 4 months a year in Tucson, I love the place. I have visited the Hobby/Ace shope many times. Besides your airbrush and compressor dont forget a spray booth. Many online and in this fourm areas for building your own spraybooth if you want.
I have built a few Tamyia WWII aircraft and have to say they are very well engineered. Take your time and enjoy. Brett Green has published a few books on building various Tamyia aircraft that I thought were first rate.
Thanks Rob. I am picking up that book as well as a couple others on finishing. Videos are good but sometimes books go into a bit more detail to help understand the why of things.
The spray booth…is there one to recommend? Also, does it need to be vented outside?

I live in the middle of “nowhere” below you in Douglas. I ocassionaly manage a trip to that “Ace” hobby store on 22nd and Kolb.
( I love that place! )
It’s 110 miles one way for me, but we’ll worth it.
There is a Hobby Lobby in Sierra Vista…but it’s Hobby Lobby … selection SUCKS!
