Hey all, hello from Atlanta! Getting back into scale modeling after way too long a layoff from my teen years to, well, older years [:)]. I enjoy ship and aircraft models, typically WWII topics but I’m going to be looking into other areas to spice my enjoyment of the hobby up a bit.
What were some model subjects you flexed out into to expand your enjoyment of modeling?
Welcome to the Forums Loammi! Glad to have you with us.
Lots of the members got here the same way. I started at 6 years old (1946) and never stopped. I’ve tried all different types of models at one time or another to see what I liked the best. I stick mainly to WWI and WWII planes with sailing ships coming in a close second. I do Armour, cars and a figure or two once in a while to keep things interesting.
If you have any questions or problems, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The members here are very knowledgeable and ready to help out. They will offer constructive criticism if asked to.
Try Paper ships . There’s a lot of civilian craft out there. If not Paper, Go to 1/400 or smaller scale for Other civilian types of vessels. There’s a limited number. That’s why I suggested Paper. Oh, Welcome Aboard !
I also build Cars, Military Vehicles and Sci-Fi even a Wargame figure set once in a while, and for a changeup there I build Civilian Lite Aircraft and Sea Planes. Scratch-Building also comes into play. Ships of course, and as my Moniker implies, Mostly Tankers as there a lot of Tank Ships out there that a lot of folks have never seen.
Thanks for the welcome and the idea of sailing ships. They have always looked beautiful but look intimidating to build with all the rigging involved. How would you suggest dipping your toes into this area for the first time? Are there good beginner kits to look for?
For beginners I actually recommend Lindberg’s series of ships. Decent size and reasonable looking. Granted they may NOT be historically correct. Most folks looking at a sailing ship model wouldn’t know anyway. After all look at the Garbage they call sailing ships at The Home Decorating Places. They’re not even as good as Lindberg!
G’day Loammi and welcoe to the forums. I’m sorry I can’t offer any advice n sailing ship kits, but I found that sci-fi models were a tonic when I wanted something different. Why? Because they are so different and allow a lot more freedom of expression
