Hello from a new car modeler

Hi

Many years ago, I put car models together with my father. As an adult I am an avid modeler and painter of war game miniatures ( Warhammer type stuff). My dad is an avid car guy. He recently had surgery and needs to spend some time getting better. He loves cars and told me he has put together models.

I was hoping some people around here could help me find some models that might be good for him. First I don’t know if he would be into painting. So, maybe the first might be percolated. But assembly is totally ok. Also he loves muscle cars. If there is a decent model for a gremlin, that was his first brand new car he purchased. Hopefully that is enough info to get pointed in the right direction.

Thank you very much in advance

Hi ;

Welcome to the FSM forums . As for cars I do them as well as other stuff . Not my main thing , but I like them . There is a Gremlin kit on the market and it seems pretty good .

Now I am not sure but someone said it needed the phony scoop depressions on the quarter for one type and it wasn’t needed for another. You would have to check with your LHS.

I do have it , but not at hand . If I remember, it seems everything it was originally . I am hung up on Pacers right now . T.B.

Hi,

Depending on where his interests are and whether his medical conditions may impact his abilities to handle smaller stuff there are a number of snap together kits that actually build into pretty nice looking models. Recently someone here had a thread going on an Academy Hyundai Azera kit that really didn’t require any painting at all (unless you want to) and actually looks really nice (I also have a copy of the kit waiting to be built).

Similarly, Revell has a couple Police cars and NASCAR cars that are easy to build and looks fairly decent (which I believe may come with peel and stick stickers instead of decals), as well as some other snapkits like a Ferrari, 2010 Mustang GT convertable, 63 Corvette Stingray, a Humvee, a New Beetle and some sort of Chevy 4x4 pickup, etc. (http://www.revell.com/model-kits/snaptite/ )

Kits like these can be a fun way to spend time because they typically aren’t too expensive and you can put as much time as you wish into them (either just doing a simple build or spending more time by adding detail and painting etc) while still having something to show at the end.

Hope that helps.

Pat

PS to the above,

It does look like there are a couple older Gremlin models available out there (including a Lindberg “Gremlin Grabber”, an AMTERTL “Gremlin X” and an AMC “Gremlin Funny Car”, but I’ve never built any of them, so I don’t know how hard/easy they might be etc.

Welcome!

Of the Gremlin kits, one is an old Lindberg mold that is in 1/20 scale, rather than the standard 1/24 or 1/25 typical for passenger cars. It is nasty.

The other is the AMT repop of their kit from the old days. It was released as a 1975 and as a 1976, with the differences being the license plate, the grill and the side trim decals. If your Dad’s Gremin didn’t have the fancy trim painted on the side, the kit will feel right. If he had a 73 or 74 with the painted trim, he may say it looks diffeernt, but it still sure as heck looks like a Gremlin. The kit is a very straightforward build.
