Normally I have zero interest in sailing ships but your build is incredible, so much detail and fine paintwork.
Most impressive, both the model and the original ship.
I say we need to bring back figureheads on modern ships!
After Sail 250 I bought the 1/350 Amerigo Vespucci and will be enjoying the same challenge of detailing and rigging her. Thank you for your demonstrations of methods in this thread.
agree whole heartedly joe , bring some elegance to modern ships .
not much to show , just the top masts are on .
going to be offline for a while , run out of paint and brass rod for stiffening the yards .ordered but have to wait for them to get here . cause I need a fair bit .
one good thing , my magna light quit the game , new ones are a lot cheaper these days , so I got 2 , one for each side . so much better .
my paints and brass rod finally got here , so on with the sails ,
the main bowspit sail is on , nothing is finished yet , might need adjusting .
Amazing work, Steve. Such an ornate model with so much detail. And your paintwork is outstanding.
I don’t mean to be that guy, but it’s bowsprit. With an r.
If I’m not mistaken I’ve seen you ask for name clarification on one or two other things before, so just thought I’d mention it.
Again, first class work.
Cheers,
Mark
thanks mark , never be afraid to tell me .
I used the old kit for the main top mast , big mistake , I didn’t realise how brittle the plastic had become . snapped the top off of it . tried to fix it , no good , so I used my spare , all better now .

What a labor of love!
the mizzen yards have their blocks attached .
this might take a while , as I find attaching heaps of blocks very taxing , I keep having to take breaks .
Immense effort welldone, this is a superior project I nearly fell for a long time ago.
Glad I did not ![]()
Keep it up.
will do cafecrawler ![]()
the main masts have had the blocks attached . for scale the instructions are A3 paper.
Holy moly, that’s impressive.
I’ve never built a ship model in my life, so I’m looking at all of this with absolutely no experience. Did you paint the mast to get that wood effect? Because if you did, it’s incredibly convincing.
And those blocks and tackle! I’m looking at the instruction sheet you included for scale and trying to imagine working with pieces that tiny. How in the world do you handle and attach all of those?
This is a completely different kind of modeling than anything I’ve ever done, and it’s fascinating to watch.
thankyou samphoto , yes I did paint the timber colour , primer , then tamiya XF93 light brown , then an oil wash of burnt umber , careful to try and leave some streaks when you wipe the wash off .
as for the blocks , I believe they are 3mm , and I don’t know I just do it .
Well, that makes it even more impressive. The wood effect is so realistic that from the photo I honestly wasn’t sure whether I was looking at painted plastic or an actual piece of wood. Beautiful work!
