Heller Chebeck update #2

Slow but steady progress on the Chebeck. I have started fitting brass wire scratch built eyebolts to the gunrails which is rather mind numbing to say the least. The hull is nearly finished now having fitted stern piece and rudder. The wolfs head figurehead is rather impressive and adds to the overall looks of the vessel. The line of the ship is breathtaking and adding black lines accentuates this. The bowsprit isn’t fitted yet because I am expecting some minor problems fitting the sterncastle sides and deck and the bowsprit is extremely fragile to start off with. The Chebeck demands a lot of real estate on the workbench and all protuberences have to be watched when turning the ship around to avoid breakages (I get the feeling this will only get worse as I proceed).

Overall fit up until now has been good but a lot of putty was needed to fit the stern piece to the hull. Thanks for taking a look at the progress so far. Cheers,

looking good. the paint job on this is amazing [tup]

Hi Grem,

Thats is coming out great. I wish I would have though of doing the bulwarks in the red trim, makes them really stand out. BTW I had the same trouble dealing with the the D**n punch marks on the bulwarks also, all that work and they just HAD to put them there? Makes you wonder, I going to try and hide them with ropes/rigging and stuff??

Hi Enemeink and Jake,

Thanks for the positive feedback. The ejector pin marks are dreadful, can’t imagine how they built this feature in [:(] They look worse in photos than with eyeballs mark 1 though so like you I am hoping that with added cannon, tackles and elegantly draped and coiled lines they willl fade into the background.Cheers,

Looking fanatastic.Injector pins UUGHHH.Sometimes you wonder what the manufactors are thinking. I’m doing a kit right now where the backside of the part which you’ll never see is clean as a whistle, but the front side that shows has four injector marks that are impossible to sand out. Keep the updates coming this is fun.

keep it going, I had to do a search for your begining to see that is is actually a plastic model and not wooden, [tup]

Yup, you are doing a very fine job on that Chebec indeed! Bravo! I have this kit myself up in the attic, and one day, I might even get inspired to build it, but I have to get through the smaller Imai version first…

Hi there Searat, I built the Imai version about 17 years ago and gave it to a friend for his house in Thailand. The plastic used would have been even better than the Heller version for the oil wash treatment. Go for that version up in the attic: I am thoroughly enjoying watching this monster ship progress on my bench.Cheers,

Could be… On the Imai version, I simply used a couple thinned down washes of black and dark brown, and it came out quite well. The hull is basically finished and 90% of the painting, but there are all the cannons to mount, and then of course there is the rig… One interesting point about the Imai kit, the bowsprit is actually wood! Really odd, when you consider everything else in the kit is plastic! As I think i mentioned somewhere in another string, I really like ship kits that are large enough to get good detail, yet remain small enough that I can handle them easily. I have spent many hours considering the Chebek hull, its strengths and weaknesses, determining its abilities, and it really is a quite remarkable design!
