Hello All,
I’m building Heller’s E-3B AWACS (Tinker AFB, OK version) and am unsure about the landing gear color. The grey color callout in the instructions doesn’t seem right to me. And, the newly released Minicraft kit says to use aluminum. My question is this: what is the correct color for the landing gear? Thank you all for the help and input.
I thought the landing gear was painted white with silver oleos just like every american aircraft (for hydraulic fluid leak identification)?
I did too, that’s why I’m confused. Thank you!
As a former employee of the Tinker AFB Depot Level maintenance facility for these aircraft, the answer to your question depends on several factors. These landing gear assemblies are sent out to an overhaul facility, and returned in literally brand new condition. For many years they were white, but in recent years I have seen a few that were a light glossy grey. You pretty much can’t go wrong with the white in this case.
If you would like I’ll call AWAC at Tinker on Monday and see what they say.
