Hello All;
I’m in a bit of a jam and am needing some help with the labeling decals. I am modeling the plane to represent LTjg John Leppla aircraft in the battle of the Coral Sea.
I have scratch built a 1/5 scale Dauntless copying the Revel model kit (Fuselage 80" and wing span 100"). The Dauntless is also a (get this) RC glider [:O] that is getting tossed off of a cliff on May 28th at the PSS fest in Cajon Pass calif.
Anyhoo, … I am on the last leg of the build and I had vinyl cut for the roundels and the large 2-12 lettering. What I need it the small lettering such as the life raft, no step and stuff like that to complete the model.
I have tried like a mad man trying to find this information and I cant seem to find it. I have downloaded decal sheets, but they are to small or of very low quality to read.
Can anyone please help me by this weekend? I am going to have an emergency run of dry transfers made on Monday.
Here is a glimps of my scratch built Dauntless.

I can’t help with your decal issue… but man that sucka is huge!
I’d try looking for dry transfers at the LHS’s model railroad section for dry transfers before I had custom work done…
I thought about that, … but then I thought who the heck makes dry transfers for trains that are 1/5 scale. And the fonts totally different and their an off white.
I can do the artwork myself and for $56.00 a sheet (I only need one sheet) I’ll gladly pay that. I already have over $2500.00 and 2200 hours into it, so $56.00 and 3 hours of work is a drop in the bucket at this point.
All I need is someone who has a decal sheet to tell me what the verbiage is and I can take it from there.
Thanks
Bill
Yup, … she’s a WHOPPER all right, … here are a couple of picture to bring it into perspective for you.

Oh wow… That puts it in perspectiive… Ya, the model RR transfers would be too small…
But, me being me and a cheapskate, I’d then just make paper stencils and paint 'em on, just like the real ones…
Absolutely make stencils and paint them. That’s how the originals were done.
…And you’re going to throw it off a cliff? Gulp! Rick
You should be able to find the military fonts to make the stencils on-line… Just download them into your fonts folder, then print and cut… I’d use frisket paper for this job, given the size of the stencils…
As I said before, … It is getting tossed on the 28th of THIS month. I do not have time to make stencils, They are going to be to small to make them quickly and to look right. I also do not have the time to make stencils paint them on as I have a ton of work to do in the meantime, … like fabricate the COMPLETE cockpit, finish weathering it, mask and paint the canopy and install it… I also have to finish hooking up all the electronics and program the radio. All this realistically will take a minimum of a month to do and it needs to be done in 2 weeks.
That is why I want to get these made from dry transfers, … it will take 2 hours fron the time I hand the file over to the printer to when I can start applying them. I have way to much to do without having to spend massive amounts of time playing with stencils this late in the game.
Like I said earlier, … All I need is the verbiage and I can create the file to send to the printer and then I can move onto the next task on my list., I have been working on this beast since Jan 09, … I want this project to be finished,
Accurate Miniatures has a 1:48 kit of this A/C. I built mine and have the instruction sheet. If I can help you in any way, let me know. If someone else has this kit with the decal sheet intact maybe they could scan and email it to you. I`m willing to get out the magnifier and try and tell ya what goes where…let me know.
Len
I, too, built the Accurate Miniatures 1/48 of this guy. Congrats, BTW, on nailing the S-12 for the actual Coral Sea bird, versus the 2-S-12 that IIRC was just painted up for a press shot or somesuch.
Alas, I’m out of town this weekend, and my decal sheet and instructions are long since chewed up and gone.
YWD makes a stencil set for the SBD-1/2/3 that may be useful:

Well, guess what? DUH…I forgot I had 2 of those AM kits so I have the decal sheet. I will scan it for you along with the placement sheet. Just PM your e-mail address and Ill have it to you by tomorrow night. Its a small decal sheet but I guess youll be able to enlarge it enough to see what youre looking for.
Len
Len,
Oh, your a life saver, … that’s for sure!
Anything would help. Everything on the web, the resolution is so low that if you try to enlarge it even slightly, … it gets all pixelated and you cant read anything. If you could scan it in high resolution, … that would be great. If not, … just the verbiage will work, … I can guess most of the placement just by what it represents. the rest, … oh well. [t$t
I should have thought about the decal sheet a while back, … but it slipped my mind during the weathering stage which is were I’m at right now. This is the mother of all weather jobs. I have tad bit over 100 hours in weathering already and I’m about 3/4 of the way done.
I’ll have to order a sheet of decals for my next project, a Beech 18 which I have already shaped the fuselage. I just need to glass it. It to is going to be a glider. I saw this diorama and thought to myself, … Oh yeah, … I gotta have one of those. Whom ever built that model, … did a fantastic job. I want to make it exactly as they have. Here is a couple of shots of the progress so far. BTW, … it is also 1;5 scale and has a wing span of 114"! [;)]
I will PM you with my email addy
Thank You
Bill

Bill,
I hope it works out for you. Those are some fantastic looking birds.
Maybe this will help. Ill start looking at the stencils with my magnifier....too bad these decals arent 1:32 scale…lol

placement…

Doesnt look like this will help you with what you need...figured give it a try anyway. Theres a way to share through Photobucket…have to figure it out.
Hang in there!
Len
Len,
Thanks A bunch. The verbiage you sent me with the placement sheet will work just fine. The decal sheet I can make out the word placements as far as how many lines and what not.
Again Len, … Thanks!
Bill
Len,
I took the files you sent me and used the appropriate font to make the file for the dry transfers. I had them printed yesterday and I applied a few last night. Here are a couple of pictures.
Thanks Again, … you saved me!
Bill
