Just a heads up I “attempted” to use Testors Flat clear coat over my Hasegawa SH-60B (1/72) and the result was disastrous[#oops]. It ate right through the Gunze semi gloss paint job and the tempera highlighted panel lines. Aggghhhhhhhhhh[soapbox]! Not a complete loss though, I was able to strip “everything” off with oven cleaner. Now! Does anyone know where I can find replacement decals.
I guess I’ll have to use Gunze’s clear coat version huh.
Sorry to hear of your misfortune, its one of those things a lot of us have had to learn the hard way…not sure of any aftermarket sheets for that kit, but some of the guys on the helicopter forum may be able to help.
Sorry to hear about your paint disaster. Which clear coat did you use? They have acrylic, enamel and lacquer based. Matching clear coats to the base paint is important as you has sadly found out.
Many of us use Future floor finish as a clear coat, and you can mix in Tamiya flat base to achieve anywhere from a semi-gloss to a dead flat finish. Check out Swanny’s incomparably good Future article.
I used enamel. I usually do use Future, however this time being my first time using Gunze Sangyo, I thought to myself hey glossy finish I can skip the future[party]. Decals went on no silvering. Now time for the flat coat. Well here is your end result[sigh].
Sorry to hear the bad news. laquer paints do react sometimes with other paints more so than the acrylic clear coats. Besides the fumes could send you off on a little trip on there own. I prefer Testors Acryl clear. There are no nasty fumes and the clean up is a breese. I have never heard of it reacting with anything that has ever been placed on a model. Good luck on the rebuild. To bad models are not like computors. You could restore it to the previous days progress!
