He 162D in desert camo

Hi gang, I’m finally taking the plunge & posting pics of my recently-completed 1/48 He 162D from Dragon. Seeing as how the thing never went operation I figured I’d go completely “what-if” on the camo too. Two shades of desert sand with rough-applied olive splotches. My reasoning is that a high-mounted engine would be less likely to pick up debris on a desert landing strip. (Of course the thing had pretty narrow-track landing gear - argh!)

I don’t usually open up the engine bays or cockpits, but with the detail on this kit, it would have been a shame to cover it all up. To be honest I had some issues with the landing gear & was half-thinking about displaying it wheels-up… but all those goodies would have been hidden.

Feedback & questions welcome, enjoy!

Pretty sharp, you certainly did a great job on this one. No major construction issues that I can see!

How’s the kit? I might like one of these

Thanks RadMax8. I hid the issues with cleverly angled photos!!

It is a very nice kit, but does have a couple of issues, or it just may have been things I didn’t handle properly. It was my first time on a Heinkel.

Beautiful detailing on the engine, cockpit & landing gear bay. Engraved panels seemed realistic, bolts & other mechanical details were good. The overall shapes seemed right to my eye. The beautifully-detailed landing gear bay was awkward to deal with, for me at least. Lots of actuators jammed into a small space. Doing it again I would probably install the “box” for the landing gear, then add the gear after painting. The other thing was matching the dihedral on the wings. The wings (newly-tooled additions to an existing kit I believe) didn’t mate all that well to the fuselage, if you look at it dead-on you can tell. To be honest if I’d had more time/patience I probably could have evened them out.

Bottom line, I was happy with the buildup and I would certainly try another if I spotted one.

Nice work, Vance.

Nicely done Vance [Y]. Don’t see many of these built & yours is a treat.

Regards, Rick

That’s a wild what-if. I like it. Colors look good on it.

Nice build. The camo choice makes it look completely different.

Great job. I like the camouflage and the engine detail looks great too.

Thanks to all for your kind comments. It was a little frustrating in places, but I was pleased with the final product. Now I need to get the nerve up to drop it into a diorama of some kind! I’ll have to keep my eyes open for some 1/48 support vehicles.
