I fell in love with this aircraft many, many years ago at the Reno air races. It is the only aircraft I think I love more than the P-47. Anyway, I would like to build one, but it must be at least 1/48 scale, but I have only tracked down one kit, the Trumpeter, and one reviewer was not very impressed with the kit, and for the price, usually a bit over $40, it should be a nice kit!
Anyone know of other kits that are available? I saw a Hobby Craft in 1/48 scale on ebay, but I guess that is an older kit out of production.
The 1/48 Hobbycraft kit is reissued from time to time, but is older and could use some upgrades. There is also a 1/32 kit by Hobbycraft that is also a base kit that can be tricked out with some creativity to really be an eye catcher. The basic kit is simplistic, but essentially correct. I am like you and fell in love with that brute at a local air show here… pure piston engined power!
Looks like the Trumpeter kit is the best choice with what is available. But then I need to get an F-5 (my favorite jet of all time) and just found out that AFV club has one, and every collection should have a P-47 and I suppose a Corsair, and I’ve never built a Spitfire, and the first kit I took seriously was a Monogram Skyraider, so for certain I need to get the Tamiya kit and do that one again…too many kits, not enough time/money [:)]
