Hawker Hunter Cockpit Colors

I am in a quandary . . . I am about 10% into Revell’s 1/32nd Hawker Hunter FGA.9, and I had already painted the cockpit in the colors recommended on the instruction sheet. Just recently, I did some casual research online and found these colors to be incorrect (in fact, they were way off!). Repainting the cockpit won’t be a huge deal, as I haven’t even glued the cockpit into the fuselage yet, but it would add another coat or two of paint to the cockpit, and I’m afraid I might lose some of the details.

So, my question is: should I just leave it the way it (already) is, or should I repaint it the correct color?

You don’t have to worry about covering detail if you strip the paint off. Next time you or your wifey goes to the store, wander down the kitchen cleaning supplies aisle. There you will find the best paint stripper ever-Easy-Off Oven Cleaner. This stuff is in a spray can and will take paint off PDQ, no matter what type (i.e. enamel or acrylic). Get a properly sized ziplock bag and some gloves and head outside. Put the parts in the bag, put the gloves on, and spray away. Wait a couple hours, then take an old toothbrush (or other appropriately sized scrub brush) and scrub away. That easy off is nasty stuff so don’t let it touch your skin. You cna get some bad chemical burns. Ask me how I know[xx(] It should not harm the plastic. Good luck!

Tx for the advice; I was debating whether I should go through all the trouble of stripping the old paint off, but I suppose if I’m going to do it, I’d might as well do it right! And it doesn’t sound all that hard, just gotta be careful . . .

Yeah, the Revell directions have you painting various parts of the cockpit four different colors (medium green, RAF dark sea grey, anthracite grey, and flat black), but all the photos & references I’ve seen show it an overall flat black.

Instructions for one of my Typhoon kits show a light green color FS34227 for the cockpit which looks more green than the RAF Interior Green #2062 from Model Masters.

According to a 1/32 Typhoon Mk Ib build in Model Airplane International Magazine June 2006, the interior is painted green but has this, “only an area in the lower, middle, of the framework is black,as this was anti-corrosive paint because the battery box is located in that area.” The author Jay Laverty also states that all Typhoons and Tempests have anodized instrument panels so they appear purple and not strictly black.

Hope this helps.
