Have you ever built something really weird?

When I was first getting into model building, my dad and I would go out and find models we could build together. I was crazy about moving parts at the time, swinging wings, retracting landing gear, all sorts of things. [:p]

Back in 1992 he came home a bit late from work and showed me a kit he found, a Monogram kit of a weird fictional plane called the Flap Jack. The kit had an electric motor inside that powered flapping wings, spinning props, moving guns, etc. The kit would bounce up and down on a springy base.

I actually found a picture of the crazy thing on the internet a moment ago and it got me to thinking, what were the weirdest kits you’ve built?

What a weird kit [:D]

Cool topic. The only weird “kits” I remember were probably some BattleTech creations. -cept maybe for that model of Snoopy’s doghouse/fighterplane from decades ago -at least I think it was a model…

There were those caricatures of hot rods called “Deal’s Wheels” that Revell produced in the early 70’s. The Sept 2003 edition of FSM had an article about them in the back. I built the VW - oversized balloon tires, engine hanging out the back, mustachoied driver - what a riot!!

Justsaw the Polar Lights model of the “Homer” in Hobby Lobby today. Has to be the wierdest car I’ve ever seen.

I’ve built the Homer, the Jetsons space coupe and the old and new versions of the Mystery Machine just for fun. Built some of the old Hawk Wierd-Oh’s a while back.

I wouldn’t say it was a weird kit but I took a B-52 and decked it out in Thunderbirds colors. Could you imagine 6 B-52’s going through the Thunderbirds manuvers?

Wow, when I saw this topic I was gonna say Snoopy’s Sopwith Camel Doghouse, but Fish beat me to it! Man, I loved that crazy thing…I must have had 3 or 4 of 'em in my youth. Motorized! Gotta love it.

Other than that kit, I remember I built these weird monster kits that featured funky heads propped up on their hands, all glow-in-the-dark, done by MPC or maybe FunDimensions. I had a Wolfman and a Mummy, but I think there were others as well.

Speaking of FunDimensions, I remember building some “Ship in a Bottle” kits; one a dinosaur scene, one a scene from Planet of the Apes, and one the shark cage scene from Jaws!
Plus, I had the “poster scene” Jaws model as well.

Weird but cool stuff![:D]

I love that episode of the Simpsons, very funny. I keep meaning to build that for a friend of mine who’s a big Simpsons fan. I wish there was a King of the Hill kit out there.

Hey Demon, have you picked up that new Primus? It’s an ep and a dvd for 10 bucks, has all the vids they’ve ever made, including The Devil Went Down to Georgia. It’s great. Also, there’s a new Floyd dvd out of them live at Pompeii, lots of concert and studio footage, interviews and whatnot. You also get to see them developing Dark Side of the Moon. It’s excellent.

New Primus?? Hot dog!!

As a favor_I built the Polar Light’s kits of the 4 Beatles from Yellow Sub-what a pain, had to be careful with smooth seams, paint and edges. I was a 'Stones kid, too.

Every time I pull a kit out and start building, it turns out weird.[bow][bow]

I did the “Wallace and Gromit” plane and motorcycle and sidecar. I also did the Yellow Submarine. I used to love those funky hot rods that Monogram put out. I also did a 1/48 B-58 in Thunderbirds livery. Oddly enough, I’m building a Blue Angels S-3 now.

The weirdest model I’ve ever built must be the DFW T.28 Floh… Kind of a flat fish with wings, with a number of openings in the front that kind of make out a [:)]

For those who do not know it, here’s a link to a few pics (model not built by me!)…

I have built two of those T.28, both in 1/72, vacuform, but that was a while ago. I do have the newer Eduard kit somewhere in the loft, though…

I recently finished the Eduard kit and it builds beautifully. An impressive plane according to its stats.

Has anyone ever built The Visible Trout?
I know it’s “educational,” but I’ve always thought it was a pretty weird kit…

Any pics, Paul…???

I’d love to post them but my computer ineptitude makes me not know how. How does that work?

Paul,

Go to

http://rongeorge.com/modules/Gallery/models

At the top right corner, click on the Logon link. When the window appears, insert:

newfsm (as user name)
models (as password)

After a couple of seconds you should be back to Ron’s page. Click and open the first album (‘upload’ or something like that). There will be many more options at the top right this time. One of them is ‘add images’. Click on that and a new window appears. Browse to find and insert (double click) the right file on your hard-drive (or CD-R). Insert some details name of the model,…) if you want in the second field. Click at the bottom of the window to upload the picture (do one at the time… most of the times I’ve tried several, I’ve been thrown out!).

After a minute or so, another window will tell you that the upload is completed. Click on dismiss. Your pic is in Ron’s Gallery. Go back to Ron’s gallery and click on the last page of the ‘upload’ album to see your picture. Click on it to open it and see it in large. Right click on it and then click on ‘properties’. This new windows gives you the url address of your pic. Copy this address and before pasting it, open the FSM Forum in which you want to post a pic. Click on ‘Post new message’. Along the many icons you’ll find on your ‘blank message’ is one for pictures. Click on it. This appears in the message field: (img)(/img) (except that the brackets are like this instead […]…!)

paste the url of our image so that thwe address is showing between (img) and (/img). (there canot be any space between (img) and the address, nor between your address and (/img).

Add text as required, the post your message and then check to make sure everything is there.

Im sorry I make it sound complicated but it’s not really. It take a couple of minutes that’s all…

Domi
