Have You Driven a Ford.... Lately?

A big departure from WW2 AC, but had to try something a little more modern.

This my stab at the Tamiya 1/48 F4D Skyray. Built OOB & painted with ModelMaster enamels.

Although it’s done in the Box Art scheme, the kit decals were not used. The blue areas were masked & painted with MM Insignia Blue. The decals are AM from Cutting Edge. The gold stars are individual decals, applied one at a time. A very tedious decal job, but I think the results were worth it.

Thanks for looking.

A very nice looking bird.

Another very nice build Rick.

Thanks for sharing that my friend.

Mike

Excellent build and very nice finish. I built the same kit in the same scheme, using the same brand of enamel paint, some years ago, but I folded the wings on my model subject. The model is still on display in a shop at present.

Rob

Hey, that’s a super build, Rick!! Thanks for sharing the pictures!

Take care,
Frank

Rick, excellent build and great detailing. You are a “star” in my book.

wow man, thats amasterful job.

Whoa, Rick.
That’s actually a very sharp build - very clean and quite impressive. You should be very proud of what you’ve done.
Keep up the good work and make sure you show us your next build…I’ll be looking forward to it!!

Good stuff, Rick! Very impressed. I don’t know much about this AC; I only heard about it for the first time a few months ago. Seems like a fairly obscure fighter, is it not?

A very nice clean build Rick[tup]

Tamiya surprised a lot of people
when they released this one.

Cliff, mkhoot, Chris, Joe, Dave Mike, Rob, Frank, Don, woodbeck, Lee, mobydick, Thad, obiwan, Thanks everyone for the comments. Glad you liked it.

mkhoot, Hi Mike, how are you my freind ? Haven’t seen you for a while, but I’m sure our paths will cross at Old Guard Hobby shop.

Rob, post some pics when you can. Would love to see it.

mobydick, it wasn’t in service very long but I wouldn’t classify it as obscure, at least to US Navy fans.

obiwan, yeah, Tamiya does surprize us now & then. I just wish they would do it more often.

Regards, Rick

Immaculate, Rick.
Mine went back in the box with nothing left to do but add the gear and tanks after I crushed the canopy while touching up the paint on the frame. The kit almost falls together, and is a joy to build, but you took the high road when it comes to finishing it: chucking the thick kit decals and painting the navy blue areas, and making the panel lines stand out nicely. I’m gonna pull that sucker out and see if I can find a new canopy in aftermarket or somewhere else. Thanks for the inspiration.

gunney, thanks for the comment. Hope your piggy bank fills up real fast.

sharkskin, Thanks for the comment. Yeah, not only are the decals on the thick side, but I felt getting a smooth join on the fuselage spine from the split decal would have been difficult. Masking & painting the blue areas wasn’t that tough, but the individual stars began to wear me down. Hope you can salvage your build. Post a pic if you do, would love to see it.

Regards, Rick

Very nice results… looks awesome.
