Bodge I feel your pain. Im the same way and wish i could snap out of it. I seem to get to the paint stage and see something on the tube or in the forum and thats it for the kit Im working on.
Tigerman…to use a famous quote…“You have nothing to fear but fear itself”.
I understand at times you can question youself, hell I do that all the time. The big thing is to learn from a mistake, figure out how to fix it and go on from there. And most important…we are not saving lives here…if you hobby gets you worried or depressed you need a new hobby.
That’s just it. Doesn’t it feel as if you are building for the masses as opposed to yourself? It’s not necessarily worry about mistakes, it’s the potential backlash we have if someone doesn’t agree with it. I mean I’m man enough to take it, but everyone interprets differently. I just need to worry about my own likes and dislikes and forget about someone else might think.
WOW[:O][:O][:O], this became a popular thread!!!..and I’m enjoying reading them, keep 'em coming!
Bodge: I wish I had your relatives[;)]…I got ONE kit for Christmas and my B-day (Jan 17th) COMBINED!!!
Tigerman: I’ll make you deal, I’ll send you my un-built kits, you can build them for me…heck, you can even paint the base color…then send it back to me and I’ll take it from there. Also, send me your finished builds, “spec” the weathering you want and I’ll set ya’ up and mail it back to you…win-win for us both…what do you think[tup]!!!
Here’s another question/thought since the thread has turned a shade of introspective…do you ever get a sort of sad, empty feeling when you finish a kit that taken up a lot of time and effort because you really wanted it to turn out well? Once I finished my Porsche Tiger I, I felt this odd sense of empty completion that I can’t put into words very well… it was like saying goodbye to an old friend or lover and knowing that the relationship had run its course and reached the inevitable conclusion. And like an old photo of a long-lost friend or lover, that tank sits in a display case to remind me of what we went through to reach the end.
Whoa, that’s deep… and I do understand what you mean…hence, how this thread got started…I get “philosophical” for some reason, introspective if you will…what I put in bold above says it well.
Um…Can I get in on that deal sending my kits?? I’m kidding of course. I agree with Tiger I started getting hot and heavy with F1 cars and it seem all anyone could do was point out my mistakes. I would like to think my skin is thick but damn it was rough.
So I’m trying to the jump to armor because it seem to be a little less pressure to so spot on. Plus I’m not at this point worried about the AFV I’m working on being set in the exact moment in time. However I do hope that the self that the finished model rest on won’t reject it because I missed something.
I do have a blast building them even if I’m tweaked a little
They day I build for the masses is the day I quit the hobby!!
I post stuff, I ask peoples opinions but in the long run this is art. My interpertation is different than everyone else. The ONLY one I have to please is me. If someone give a negitive review of way something I have posted looks, no problem, that is his opinion. Everyone is into something different
If I have made a building error like a seam showing, I want to be told. Sometimes you are so far in the woods you miss the trees.
If I go to shows I try only to go to AMPS style judging. Again, competition against another modeler is in the judges opinion and subjective. AMPS you compete against yourself.
I like to learn here and teach. By getting opinions I learn different perspectives.
But as far as building for the masses. What in the hell is a guy like me doing on this site which is mostly (at least lately) “Germaholics” when I am the guy doing US OD and hearing from others how its boring. In the long run I don’t care!!!
Lastly, I will give you a quick example, Doog and I are very different. He comes at his building to put togeather a scene and tell a story. He also, as he says only looks at stuff with pz in the title. I an into US artillery and build the model with a base that does not draw attention from the model.
I don’t always agree with his opinions of some of my stuff (opinion not mechanical technique review)but I highly respect his opinion no matter and have learned a lot from him.
Build for yourself…this is not a team sport!! And most of all HAVE FUN
I know the force is stong with the armor guys over here. Ive been lurking around in this forum for quite some time. And all of you do amazing work but Im not going to worry about it. What Ive seen in this site is alot of guys willing to help rather then criticize.
Oh, so tempting. However, I’m a slow builder, so you’d get little in return. Plus there’s the old “If I can’t do it myself blah, blah, blah…” Appretiate the offer though. [:)]
Awwwwe, c’mon[^], I won’t tell, if you won’t. I think it would be a fun challenge to paint to someone else’s spec’s…a “commission” build (must be the architect in me) if you will, but for no $$$…
I have a Panther A I plan to build myself for the “Urban Armor” GB (plus a dio’) and a T55A for Cold War GB, which leaves me no time for my Tamiya Panther G Late. I just want to get to the gray/brown camo’ ASAP…you could build that one for me…
HEY, new GB idea: “Tag Team Group Build”, kinda like the WWF of model building!!!.. “Tigerman and SMJmodeler meets dupes and doog”…a cage brawl event…(sorry I dragged you into this guys, yours are the first names I thought of…[(-D]
I have the same problem, I have an army of kits all built and painted but I have not finished them because it’s time to weather them!
Makes me miss just building a kit and not even painting it (just the bare plastic) and having so much fun with it and then “driving” it around the back yard and getting it covered in dirt, I miss being 9…
Townsy11: This seems common and I don’t know why. Can you think on that a minute and really try to identify why you are so hesitant to start the weathering…man I sound like a psychiatrist!
SMJ: lol, I guess it’s because I find it (you guys are gonna hate me for this:) “boring” I mean it takes me so long to do a wash(mainly because I build mostly modern stuff and they’re quite huge) and as soon as I finally finish doing one THERES 3 MORE so the weathering process just doesn’t appeal to me as much mainly because of how monotenous it can get (I put it right up their with cleaning up and assembling indy links). I mean I LOVE building and painting the kit and I know I want to have it weathered but I just can’t find the urge to.
I feel a little bit better now after venting all that, thanks.
When I was little I liked to have my brother build kits and I paint.
Lost the patience over the years, now I rather build and have someone else paint them.
When it come to weathering THE WALL thats stopping me is a fear of messing the kit up. I dont feel at this point my skill with armor weathering would allow me to fix the mistakes if made.
Now that being said Im going to join a club. There are alot of armor guys in this club and I think this will greatly improve my skills over time (I hope).
