Have you built a B-58 Hustler

I’m curious as to how many other folks have built the Monogram 1:48 B-58. I’m in the process of refurbishing mine and would like to see any others out there. Thanks[:D]

I’m slooooowly working on that kit, and I mean slow. So far I,ve rescribed the entire kit, and assembled the engines. That’s it. There is a beautiful example of a B-58 in the gallery section at hte Aircraft Reasource Center site. The plane was built by Peter Doll.
It’s definitely worth a look.

good luck,

Dragonfly,
I know you can probably find ref. pix on the net, but if you need some good shots of the gear,I got’em. There’s a B-58 down at the Lone Star Flight Museum that I took photos of for that reason. This is the bird down there.

Yes I have and the joint where the main fuselage and the tail section come together is a bear. I never did get it to my satisfaction. I like the way she looks when she is completed though. I have some pictures from the bird at The USAF Museum in Dayton if they would be of some assistance let me know.

Eddie,

Outstanding on the photos. That looks like an excellent example of the Hustler, most photos i’ve seen, the birds are in pretty bad shape. I might have to e-mail you to get some samples if you don’t mind.

MKelly,

I agree on that tail joint. I did a little dry fit, and there’s definitely a problem there. I was thinking a little sheet stock, filler, and sanding.

Dragonfly,
Send an e-mail and I’ll send you those photos. They helped me getting the landing gear closer to being right. Here’s what mine looked like before and after. The new paint is orange, even though it looks red. It’s going to be marked as the YB-58A,55-662. Yes,that tail is a female dog and no it’s not easy to fix. I modified tail cone to show how the test A/C looked.

Eddie,

Many thanks… good lookin’ hustler. Will e-mail tommorrow.

Well, since this thread is almost a year old, I thought I’d show a little progress( and I do mean little[:D]).I’ve the flaps and main gear back on, plus the burner cans went on today. A little more paint, a clear coat and then decals.[:)]

Here is a link to one a buddy of mine did.

Looks great Eddie…haven’t touched mine since we talked last year. Too many Tamiya kits I guess. Outstanding job on the Hustler.

My Hustler is still in it’s original cardboard “hanger”! I remember walking around the B-58 at the LSM in Galveston but didn’t think to take a few of pictures of the landing gear. It’s been a few years since I was there. They had a couple of my models on display a few years back. F-100 and T-6.

Mel, if you need pictures of the landing gear, look through here. I took a bunch at Pima last November.

I built this bird about a year ago. I also had a bit of a fit problem with that tail section, but the biggest problem I had was with closing the landing gear doors. Due to space concerns, I typically build the big 1/48 bomber types with the wheels up in order to hang them “in flight” from the ceiling. One of the complaints I usually have with Monogram kits is the forced option to only build wheels down - often there is a lot of work to be done to get those gear doors into the closed position. Sometimes the results aren’t exactly great despite my best efforts. On this front my work on the Hustler was probably middle of the road - if you look closely you can see the lack of alignment in the main gear doors and the surrounding housing that is a part of the wing structure.

Aggieman,

That is one sweet Hustler![:D] I’ve started putting decals on mine. This could be one of the longest builds in my history as a modeler.[banghead][swg]

I have one. My older brother picked it up for me from a garage sale. It was already built. I spray bombed it silver and hung it from my ceiling.

It really could use a “restoration” one of these days.

Thanks for posting. Yours looks great!
