Hase's P-39 **UPDATE** Almost Done Prt 5 1/18/08

Howdy all,

I have finally gotten around to dusting off the P-39 and got back into the rythm of things…!! The 39 only sat for about a month while I worked on other builds…

I originally wanted to build her up a in the 350thFG markings but unfortunetly those a/c were “L” models were as this one is a “D”… Just some minor differences but I did not feel like tweekin it since this is going to be a OOB build[:P] (Thats why I picked up the Eduard Profi Pack of the 39’s in the MTO)

Anywho, this is going to be a tribute to my late grandfather who was a “Line Product” Supervisor at Bell Aircraft from 39-45.

I am going to use the name " Carol’s Daddy" off a Mustang sheet since thats my Mom’s name… So in a round about way I am killing two birds with one stone… Laughs

However, I am not really sure what unit she will be from… As for the build so far, the only really pain I encountered was the one piece canopy and the way it sits in the front section. No matter how I tried, there is a little ridge around the front windscreen and fuselage. Another note, be careful when working with the front support for the front LG, it is some wat brital. I hardly touched it and the support broke [banghead] No worries though, thats what Ten-X is for [;)]Well here she is thus far; Comments and crits welcomed…

Looks good so far, the cockpit looks great. What color is the cockpit interior?

David

Looking good there Mike! I finished up the office on my Eduard version, and should be gluing the fuse together soon. Have you built the Eduard one, and if so- how do they compare?

Hey Dave,

Glad you liked. As for the interior colour, I used Drk Medium Grn as well as regular Med Grn. Bell Aircraft had their own variant of interior green…

Laughs, matter of fact their colour was called Bell Green. As for my build, I first sprayed the interior flat black. Then I did light coats of Drk Med Green then dry brushed the Med Green.

Hopefully this helps ya out a bit Dave… Again thanks for looking!!

Looking great Mike [tup] As I learned how the colors varied so, the cockpit looks spot on. Can’t wait to see it finished. [:D]

Hey Frank,

Thank you too kindly my friend [:D]. Wooo very cool, is it the Profi Pack or the regular Eduard kit?? Any pix

I have not yet built the Eduard kit yet… Smelled the plastic, does that count?? LOL If anything ask Justen aka “The Hannaman”, he built one.

From what I can remember him telling me, the over all build is great except you will have to lightly sand the outter wing edges b/c they are a little thick!!

Just by looking at the two, each one has there pro’s and con’s Again I have only built the Hasegawa kit and I feel the level of detailing is superb… Hey, wait a minute… are you tryin to get me to do another Airacobra w/ out me even knowing it!!! Laughs [(-D]

By chance, do you have a scheme for yours?

Hey Drew,

Thank you for the kind words… I like how you mentioned that the colours varied so. One can only imagine the condition after a hard days work, this including weather conditions, mantainence and the like…

I too am looking forward to her being done!! And I am glad you liked how the interior turned out!!

Actaully shortly I should be putting on the base coat of black and then the final scheme…

Looking good Mike. A pretty good out of the bottle match for “Bell Green” is ModelMaster French Khaki.

Regards, Rick

LOL, if I gotta try to build four Hurricanes, then it’s only fair you gotta build four Airacobras!

OK, I’ll post a couple of pics if you don’t mind, but I promise NOT to hijack your thread! Here’s the interior:

If I remember correctly, I painted the interior MM Euro Green as I thought it looked close to Bell green.

As for the scheme, I am gonna do a fairly anonymous aircraft of the 11th AF from Adak, AK during 1942.

Hey Rick,

Yea know I too thought of using “French Khaki” but a the pix that I have of a P-39 at our local museum seemed to match that of Med Green.

To note, this particular ship’s interior was never touched… As is when she rolled off the line… Maybe I’ll use the colour you mentioned for my next P-39 build. Again interior colours seemed to vary due to paint batches…

Glad you liked the build thus far my friend!!’

Hey Frank,

No worries my friend…!!! I love what you have done to your pit!! What did you use for the dry brushing bit?

It looks like you used some sort of drawing pencil for the dials in such for the IP!! Great work so far!!

Ok, I guess you have a point there Frank… Laughs Oooo Adak AK, 11th AF to boot… Lookin forward to your build as well

Again thank you for posting!!

Mike…looking great! on one of my top 5 a/c faves. You too Frank! Wow! 2 doors on that kit?!

I’ve got the old Mono…kit I love…waiting

Mike,

For the IP dials, I used a single hair brush (or something like that!) to paint the numbers and needles. I think my eyes are STILL crossed from that job! Thanks for the kind words, it really helps to keep me motivated!

Last year, I built my Hasegawa P-40E in some anonymous Aleutian markings. Almost every one from that campaign has the yellow tiger on the nose, guess I just had to be different. One of my modeling projects is to complete one of every aircraft flown in that campaign, and the more drab looking the better. It seems like a fitting tribute to the men who served there and never received the recognition they deserved. Sorry about the [soapbox], I’ll be quiet now and let you have your thread back. [XX][swg]

Hey nam,

Thank you for the kind words… Yea this is in the top 5 a/c that I really like!! Especially knowing that my Grandpa used to build these and the fact that the “original” Bell Aircraft factory is only about a 15 minute drive from my house[:D]

Gotta love the Airacobra…!!

Howdy Frank,

Again, no problems my friend… Hey we are all family here[:P] Ah very cool… I have a few brushes like that… MMmm must find em now…!!

That whole campaign is very interesting and yes, that is one of the less talkeds about campaigns… However it seems that it is now finally being recognized on the A&E as well the Military Channel!!

Maybe you should post your P-40 my friend… Yea know to get me motivated to finish the one that I am in the process of building now[;)]

By the way, what colour did you use for your background?? It appears to be a very light blue to powder blue?

Thanks again!!

OK, for some reason I can’t see your pics… Stupid computer…

I’ll get back to you later…

OK Mike, you asked for it! Here’s my “Aleutian” P-40E:

As for the background, I used a light blue piece of construction paper I found at Hobby Lobby. Thanks again Mike, and keep those pics coming! [tup]

Looking great, Mike. I’m looking forward to seeing this one until the end!

Mike & Frank, you two have excelent builds going on there. Cant wait to see either one done. Also just a quick thanks to both of you for any & all help, past or present!!. Keep us posted!!

Hey Frank,

Ok I did ask for it and it was worth it…!! One question, how did you achieve those panel lines and how they vary accordingly? Especially the weathering

Ok my itch is getting stronger… Once my P-39 is done, I’ll continue on w/ my Hawk…(It’s all your fault Frank[;)][(-D])
