Finally finished this one for the P-40 Group Build, although I’m debating on adding a bit more weathering. Markings are for Wing Commander Bobby Gibbes, 3 Sqn RAAF, September '42 in Egypt:
As always, thanks for looking, and constructive comments and suggestions are appreciated!
Looks good. Weathering looks pretty well done from where I’m sitting. And it’s a nice paint scheme to boot.
I’m building this same kit (though not the same scheme for this particular kit) for that GB, but I haven’t made a whole lot of progress. Bogged down in scratch building details for the Monogram kit…
Aggieman, Charles (mucker), Rick, Frank (Daywalker), Jon (jwb), Steve (Crockett), Marc (wingnut), Greg (gzt), Karl (KJ200), Bill (howdidyoudothat): Thanks all of you for your comments and taking the time to look and respond.
Charles: One more P-40 and I’ll be up to squadron strength. Perhaps then a group photo!
Frank: I agree. Detailed but somewhat of a pain to build.
Jon: The camo was done with paper masks, held slightly off the surface with Blue Tac. The factory applied Dark Green was sprayed over with Middle Stone, usually in the field. The fuel stain is a thick wash of Burnt Umber oil.
Mark nice build. If mine comes out half as nice, Ill be happy. Please tell us what the little blue domed lens looking thing in front of the cockpit is, portside.
Thanks for the kind comments, David. The lens is a navigation light. I used some spare MV lenses for them (there’s one on the starboard side as well) in place of the clear kit parts. It’s not 100% accurate, since in reality the lens is flat and not dome-shaped and apparently this specific aircraft did not have it, but the spare lens fit perfectly and gives a little pizazz to the build.
I’ve always liked the desert schemes best out of all the RAF choices. You did a fine job with this one…every aspect and detail of this build looks like careful attention was paid to it. Very nice work! [tup]
