Hasegawa Ki-61 Tony 1/72

This is one of those builds that just languishes forever and wont die. I got this kit about ten years ago, assembled most of it, and then it ended up back in a box for a while. A couple of years ago, I got it out and started painting it, but dropped it and cracked some of the seams, then broke the pitot tube, then the antenna, then some landing gear. Instead of throwing it in the garbage, I put it back in the box. For some reason, I got it out recently and decided to have a go at finally finishing it. The construction isn’t up to my current standards, but I’m pretty happy with the way the paint came out after so many issues. I didn’t add an antenna wire because I just wanted to call this one done, and I probably would have broken something else in the process. Comments welcomed. Sorry for the photo quality, my model space is being ‘remodelled’. [:)]

Edit- after putting up the pictures, I notice the air intake on the left needs some black paint/wash to darken it.

Even with all it went through… looks real nice Lt. I didn’t know anything about this plane until I built teh big cousin of yours… in 1/32. Nicely done on the metal finish.

Thanks Marc. Did you do the new Hasegawa offering in 1/32? I’ve heard lots of good things about that kit.

Jeff

Looks real good from here Jeff. The BMF is very well done.

Regrda, Rick

Very colorful A/C. I love Japanese planes. What did you use for the BMF?

Jeff, Very nice job - particularly the paint job. Looks like it was quite involved. And the base is nice too !

Chris

Looks real good! Good thing you finished it, rather that chuck it. Real nice-

great save

Not kidding-that looks better than my best builds right now. Pretty nice for saving it from the garbage…BTW FSM said the 1/32 Tony was “flawless, a joy to build”.

Excellent build an a really interesting and colorful scheme too. [tup][tup] Thanks for the look.

Very, very nice work Jeff! Isn’t it satisfying to save a kit from the scrap bin and turn it into something to be proud of?

Nice work on the Hien. The finish is superb.

All the good things you heard are absolutely true. Great kit.

Thanks for the comments guys. The BMF is actually Tamiya AS-11, with a clearcoat of Gunze clear(not flat). Wingnut, I love the camo job on your Hien. I’m thinking about doing an Oscar in a similar fashion.

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

Jeff

I really love the paint scheme on some of the Tonys. I wanted to do one with the mottled green on the wing and fuse. Thanks for showing yours.

Something that actually worked ok for me in the clear- coating task recently was a concoction of future, a few drops of Tam thinner, and a couple of drops of Tam flat base. No problems at all. Start out with less flat base and then add a drop of more for the top surfaces if needed.

Model on!
