Hasegawa B5N2 "KATE"... (Pearl Harbor Shelf) WIP

Hi All, Recently, a few people were talking about doing a Pearl Harbor “shelf” of all the aircraft that were involved. I thought that was a pretty cool idea so Im gonna do it. I have a head start with a Val that I finished last month but have a loooong way to go! I started a Hasegawa Kate...kit #Jt 76...and had my 1st fit issue with a Has. kit ever. I had 1/8 inch gaps at the wing roots and I must not have gotten the cockpit assembly high enough into the fuselage cause when I tried to install the wings, the bottom of the cockpit was hitting the wings and couldnt get em flush with the fuse. Guess Ill be doing some sanding eh?!? This kit is the bomber version...wanted the torp version and didnt realize so Ill be building 2 Kates! Heres a couple of pics of what I have done so far. Thanks for looking and any comments are welcome. Len, sucks about the fit of the wing roots and cockpit but I’m sure you’ll straighten that out. Lookin good so far, again! The control panel, is that a decal or did you paint the dials and instruments? Good work either way.

Jon

Hey Jon! Thanks for the kind words. The instrument panel is a decal, same with the radio. Ive been lucky so far with the decals going down nice and looking pretty good. Some guys hate using them...not sure why...they work for me so Ill keep using em. Whats up with you? Shoot me a PM or e-mail if ya want.

I read the same article and “low and behold” , i have started doing the same thing. presently, i have all three Japanese planes involved by Hasegawa, "VAL, KATE, and A6M2 type 21Zero. The American side has quite a few more types involved since you had Army, Navy, and Marine squadrons involved. My US collection so far has 6 different planes. My problem is trying to get the proper colors for each plane, Especially, the Japanese. When you get into IJN planes, there is so many color schemes based on the time frame. If you would like to discuss this project and trade notes, please email me at dawgcent03@cox.net. thanks doc bailey

Must be something in the water. I just picked up a Val today and was hoping to find a Kate (no luck). I too want the torpedo version.

You have a couple of pin marks on the piece behind behind the pit, and perhaps it can still be filled. The control pannel looks nice BTW. Good luck on the wing root.

Hey pal, u shall join the group build of war in pacific. I just completed my Val dive bomber which is based on Akagi taking part in Pearl Harbour attack. Check it out!

Looks like a good start on the pit. I think you are correct in diagnosing the fit problem. I’ve built a couple of these Kates & wing/fuselage fit was noy an issue,

Regards, Rick

If youre talking about those pin marks right behind the pilots seat they get covered by another control panel. This kit has a ton of pin marks everywhere! In my pics, you can see em in the bottom of the seats...easy fix with CA but still a p.i.t.a. Theyre also all over the side walls between the ribbing…tried to fix them but was causing too much damage .I have the cockpit installed in the fuse now and you cant even see em!

Whats up Doc? Sorry..couldnt resist…lol. Sure, sounds like a plan. It seems you have a grip on all the US aircraft that was there whereas, Im not totally sure. I know there were some P-40s and maybe some Buffalos, B-17s but thats about all I know. Did the Japs use recon A/c during the raid…like Pete`s…or did they rely on their subs for that? It just seems hard to believe that they only used 3 types of A/C for the attack. Talk to you soon…Len

Good to hear! Onward…

Hi Len, everything i have read states these were the only planes used by the Japanese. In fact, there were no torpedo planes in the second raid. Other American planes at pearl were army P-36’s, P-26A’s, navy 4F4-3 wildcats, PBY3&5-Catalina’s, Marine F4F-3 Wildcats, SBD-1&2 Dauntless and SB2U-3 Vindicators. There are others. Hope to hear from you. Doc
