Dusting off a build that’a been sittring for awhile. I have a few questions.
I want to do a USMC color scheme. Belly is what color? What do I use for the topside? What metalizers do I use to shoot the rear end panels and engine nozzles?
Marines used the B,N,J,S Phantom. Most likely in gull gray over white paint. Later Phantoms were overall light gull gray. The latest scheme was the low visibility ghost grays.
You shouldn’t have any trouble finding decals for the Phantom. I just checked ebay and they had over 200 listings for 1/72 decals alone. A lot of countries flew the E and there are some really cool schemes for it. The Germans and the Japanese have some really cool special schemes.
Did the Navy fly the “E”? Marines and Navy didn’t adopt the camo paint scheme. The kit came with air force decals, but I don’t wanna do camo. Not ready for that yet.
How about metalizers for the tail end…? I’ve got burnt metal, stainless, steel, magnesium, titanium…
Well the Air Force did have enough common sense to recognize the glaring deficiency of the original F-4 design… NO GUN! They requested a gun armed version and the E was the result. For some reason the Navy or Marines never requested or purchased a gun armed version. I do believe that the Marines occasionally used gun pods on their Phantoms, but not the Navy. But the Brits, who recieved some refurbished US F-4Js, in addition to their own F-4Ks and F-4Ms equipped theirs with gun pods.
The Air Force even went so far as to equip a F-4E with gun pods on the outboard stations- THREE Vulcans!!!- for truck hunting on the Ho Chi Minh trail. Chico the Gunfighter.
It’s your model, you can build it and make it whatever you want. You want to put Marines on an E then by all means go right ahead. As far as I know it violates no laws in doing so. Have fun.
