i saw it the other day. It was an awesome movie with a twist at the end.
Yeah mate i have it on DVD and your right it’s a great Movie, makes you wonder whether or not it’s possible though…
Oh yeah did you notice at the end credits it says that the actual pilot of the Phoenix was killed during the making of the movie…
NO!! i’ll have to play it again
I take it this is the remake of the original with Hardy Kruger. Have not seen it but I have heard it is pretty good.
Cheers , Pete.
The pilot in the original movie was Paul Mantz. He had already made the takeoff they used for the movie; the director wanted an “insurance print” and he crashed and was killed on the second attempt. Haven’t seen the new version of the movie, but considering the history behind that bit of flying, hope they just used cgi this time around.
It’s only a movie
I saw both films and can say that the modern re-make is a credible effort and follows the plot of the first film pretty well except for the fact that the second film has them engaing the nomads in combat. As for wether it would be possible to convert the damaged aircraft into a flyable single engine,I will leave to the aeronautical engineers to answer.
Yes it is possible. In fact in the original movie they used a C-82 as the crashed aircraft. Engineers did in fact, with help from Fairchild, build a flyable aircraft from C-82 parts. It went through several test flights prior to being used in the movie. As stated above, on its second flight, the landing went wrong and the aircraft hit too hard causing a ski to dig into the sand causing the aircraft to flip and tumble. As a result the pilot was killed.
In the second movie they were flying a C-119. The parts for the Phoenix was made from parts of a C-82. I don’t think they actually flew it in the second movie. It was probably cgi and not actually flying.
I’ve seen both of them, they came in a two dvd package at wal mart for about 18.00. I am wal mart’s target demographic when it comes to discount war movie dvds.
