halftracks

Was looking at the Dragon Sd.Kfz. 250 series of kits (I think I have three or four of them plus two from Tamiya) I sorta wondered if I could convert a 250 to a 253. Somwbody at onetime built a kit, but have not seen one in eons. Can it be done? Or does someone sell a conversion kit? Also did the make a solid topped version of the Sd.Sfz. 251?

the Czech army made a copy of the 251 when the ones they had wore out. they added a top to it called the OT-810

Dragon made a 253 kit, #6140. I dont know of it’s current availability. But overall, it looks like a conversion would be fairly simple as long as you had good references.

I kinda suspected the 253 was just a 250 with a roof. Wonder if they ever built it with the turret like the 250/9?

thanks for the help

I have that it in the stash and it is a beauty…full interior and all…it is NOT just a 250 w/ a roof—it has specialized radios, etc…it was designed to be a StuG unit command vehicle.

That being the case then I’d suspect that they never had the turret with the 20mm cannon. What I was refering to was the basic shape and size of the halftrack. I gotta get one!

The version w/ the turret and cannon was the 250/9, which is also available as a kit from both Tamiya and DML…not sure if the DML 253 is still available…

I believe the Tamiya is an “Alte” and the DML is a “NEU”

I am very disappointed that nobody has made an Ammo Carrier. I’d love it for my Tamiya StugB.

Dragon does not show thier 253 currently available in their line up. But there are a few up for grabs on Evil bay…[:-,]

OK, while discussing and cussing the 253, I ran accross another number that’s sorta foregin to me. Anybody here know what a Sd.Kfz.252 is?

Hello my friend I’ll be starting a project on converting over a Tamiya 250/3 to a 253 and I have and old issue of FineScale Modeler that show you how this is done. An It gives you the sizes and thickness of the styrene you will need to work with on the Tamiya kit (then kit No. 3615 and know it’s No. 35113 or just 113)

Issue info: October 1997 Vol. 15 No. 8

I would post an Image but I have not asked FSM to do so yet so I’ll just tell you on the cover it’s titled:

WWII recon half-track

A detailed SdKfz 253 conversion, page 32 With a big image of the converted 250 in german gray.

OOO,OOO I found it here they still have it goody look here for info on ordering those old issues.

the top one is of the issue you will need this next one is of all the back issues for any one that may need them.

Just click on a year you all.

I believe that is the ammo carrier version…

you are so correct. The 252 was the ammunition carrier and the 253 was as you said before the command track for a Stug unit. Found a couple good photos last night. But from what I cuyld tell so far the rear looks a little different. Guess I need to dig deeper.

DML make a kit of the 253 if some of you don’t want to try the conversion. Kit No. 6140 name Sd.Kfz. 253 le Beob.Pz.Wg. Here’s an images of the model built.

I found this image of a 1:1 scale 252.

It looks like you would have the convert a 250 or find a resin kit. Good luck[tup]

ok some more images I found. Hay don’t ask me why the top is smooth I don’t know.

I know your going to love this a 1/72 how to convert a 250 into a 253. I knw it’s in 1/72 but you see how the conversion is done here also like the FSM Mag.

Now unlike the 1/72 version you don’t have to cover the full top opening just part of it in 1/35.The mag tell you how this is done.

A conversion set.
