H-34 in 1/35th anyone?

As I sit here and procrastinate, trying not to write my next paper that’s due in 18 hours, I’m contemplating the evolution of US Army attack helicopters. Actually, that’s what I’m writing the paper on, but I’m stuck more on the machines themselves than the doctrines employed over the past 40 years.

But what really has got me intrigued is the idea of an H-34 in 1/35th scale kitted out as one of the Howze Board attack helicopter testbeds…

2 .50 cals, 4 .30 cals and a ton of 3.5" rockets all mounted between the fuselage and the main gear. Supposedly they worked well enough for the Howze Board to recommend the Army proceed with an attack helicopter design in 1962, so I guess they did something right! That would be one impressive model, nonetheless.

Anyone know if there are any decent sized kits available of the H-34?

ugh… back to writing… [xx(][banghead]

I wish I did. That’s a great old beast.

Italeri makes a couple different versions in 1/72nd scale. Revell used to make a 1/48 scale that was pretty bad detail. I have a newer version 1/48 Revell that is actually a Wesland Wessex, but comes with older version nose cone that could be built as an H-34. I will sell it to you if you would like. Those are the only H-34 kits that I know of. I wish someone made one in 1/35th scale.

Some one had a 1/32 Vacuform once upon a time. Saw it at the Atlanta IPMS Nationals in the early 90’s. Someone spent a heck of a lot of time on it. Detailed engine bay and interior.

Hi Jon,

Speaking of the H-34 with weapons, here’s a picture I found in some of my stuff of the XM3 Rocket Pod installation on the 34.

Take care,
Frank

Frank,

Good detail picture! Looks like you even got the Serial No. of the bird on the tail boom.
