Gunze Mr. Color - Acrylic Paint?

Can someone tell me if Gunze Mr. Color is an acrylic or lacquer based paint? What do you thin it with?

I use Mr Color thinner which has a retarder in it. Otherwise you risk getting cobwebs emitting from your airbrush.

Mr Color is lacquer based & is best used with Mr Color Thinner - I have heard that regular lacquer thinner don’t work to well with Mr Color, but cant vouch for it.

Mr Hobby Aqueous is their acrylic range.

Mr. Color Thinner or Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. The latter is the one with retarder added as I recall, is slightly more expensive, but tends to yield better results. If you can’t get the leveling thinner, you can get Mr. Retarder and add a few drops to your paint mixture to achieve the same results. With the airbrush, I then use regular lacquer thinner for cleanup.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I was hoping that it was acrylic as I love the Gunze Aqueous paints which are hard to get. Oh, well.

The Aqueous line has been withdrawn from the US market and replaced by Mr Color. Though the Aqueous line continues to be available in some (mostly Asian) countries, the range has been reduced, everything higher than about H-100 being discontinued.

The Gunze Mr Color line is a poor substitute for the Aqueous line. Not as easy to work with. They airbrush ok with their own thinner, but for hand brushing, the clean up is a PITA. Nothing besides their own thinner works so far for clean up, and that makes it very expensive to use for that purpose. Not to mention that it does not clean well from brushes in my experience.

The Mr. Color line seems more oriented to airbrushing than handbrushing, since out of the bottle they’re pretty thick and have to be liberally thinned. They dry extremely fast though, making handbrushing problematic, but that’s what the retarder is for. Personally I’ve mostly just airbrushed it, not much handbrushing. I’ve had no problems with cleanup, whether with the AB or brushes, using straight lacquer thinner.

As for the Aqueous line, someone on another board claimed that Future reacted adversely with it which seems pretty odd…that’s the first time I ever heard of Future adversely reacting with any fully-cured paint.

I was able to find a supplier from Asia that stocks the Aqueous paint. Looks like I’m back in business! I love this paint as it airbrushes smoothly. Just airbrushed it on a Zveda T-34 and it looks pretty good.

Will Testors MM Custom Lacquer System Ultra Gloss Clearcoat work over Gunze Mr. Color paint?
