Gundam RX-78-2 Close Combat Mobile Suit 1/100

I did some research today and found a great and informative article on this very kit and was surprised to read that this other than a completely clear version is @ the top of the food chain f/Bandai’s redo of this kit, which appears has been around for along time. Now as far as the color scheme, I was interested by what the fella who built the model in the article said about color differances between the differant years the kit has been produced and featured in the Gunpla Story. Seems that the two main color schemes I found are as follows, 1st the version as done f/the Gundam OYW resulting as depected on the cover of the box and the next is a version w/pastel colors ie: the red is almost a pink, the blue pale and the yellow almost orange. The white has a tan hue with the frame a dark gray. I believe the fella remarked this version was as the RX-78-2 as appears in the video game! Now he built his this color and I admit I do like the look. I might do this version w/a weathered and used look. Thanks for the interest klik.

OK, you know more about than me, but I will agree w/U since you appear to be a willing partner in the build challenge! [*-)]

Seed and 00 are both using recycled designs and recycled storylines. You can watch Seed and point out exactly what series what is going on was taken from.

I have too admit my knowledge of the who and what about the Gundam Story is an on going process for me, I however did purchase the PG Red Frame ASTRAY because the design appeared to me to be a close resemblance to a Samurai Warrior and I really liked the sword that comes w/the kit. I have to admit that the individual I purchased from did knock some off the kit and I am looking to purchase the PG RX-78 when I find one here in the USA. Now do not take me wrong, I know the PG kits are expensive and not everyone can afford and from what I have seen they are just a larger version of MG w/some added features. But I do like the size and I am old enough I can indulge in my Hobbies, for this reason I purchased, not really because of the part the Suit plays in the Gunpla Story. To me these Mobile Fighting Suits look like modern suits of armor from the middle ages, that have just been brought up to date with the idea of making them larger, but still worn by a human/or piloted as is the case. Again I am learning. But thanks for your pointing out and I believe an individual has the right to express his thoughts on any given subject.

In answer to the question about color/scheme here is the version I am interested in doing w/more weathering and some other paint details. I did not build this model in the photo, I am only using to demo the color scheme I am interested in doing.[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

Just a foot note to anyone interested in the RX-78-2, this site has a great history and build of this newest offering. I learned alot here and the fella did a wonderful job on his presentation of this subject MFS. I really liked the photo above which is his work, the pose reminds me of a Crusader Knight about to do battle with his really long mace. The site is collectionDX.com. [8-|]

Leme point you in the direction of two builds you might enjoy.

Thanks smeagol and I will follow to the sites. [:D]

bakuc.com is now added to my fav’s. The photo gallery is just overwhelming with info for details and mods. Thanks for the site smeagol.[:D[

Yea sure.

The picture you linked, look carefully at it. See that odd sheen on the color, thats because it is not painted. He just detailed the bare plastic.

the other reason you can tell is that its really REALLY hard to get pastels in hobby paints.

Yes sir, you are correct. It is the plastic color the parts are molded in just detailed lined. And yes, pastel colors are very difficult to locate. However I work in the remodeling trade for a living and there is pastel latex paint available compatible for use in a airbrush after thinning. However, I do not intend to follow his color scheme to the letter since it really rep’s the game version, but rather the series version with the colors more a military tint in color w/semi top coating. And I also will add appropriate weathering and wear to the MFS. But hey, all this talk about paint, gotta get this beast built first, but is good to decide on what you intend to paint what color, when one gets there. As always, thanks for the tip smeagle, you sir have a sharp eye f/details.

Thank you.

Remember, when you build think in sub-assemblies. Dont build it all and paint it as one piece, build the arm and paint the frame of the arm, then paint the armor separate and once there both dried and sealed then put the armor on. That is how I am building my Zaku.

Also, a BIG thing you need ot be careful for. Weathering. A Gundam is aprox 18.5 meters tall. That is a VERY big machine. a Person can stand next to the head and only come up 2/3rds of the height. So when your weathering, if you weather it like you would a tank or car, it will look WAY overdone.

use this guide, very good

Thanks f/the info and tips. Good advice too about the weathering.

Your very welcome. Its nice to have a newcomer to gundam that doesnt have a background and wants to do things correctly.

Built left arm today and will assemble the hand this evening. I do not intend to cut the left hand apart as I did the right since I want it to firmly hold the weight of the large shield. I build @ a [sn] pace.[:D][View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

To anyone not familiar w/codyscoop.com and his tips on painting, do yourself a favor and read the whole article and all the sub-parts of his techniques. One of the best I have came across, really like the section about painting w/oils. I started many moons ago w/IR Figures and used oils alot in the painting of them. Had forgot just how versatile oils and washes could be. Great tips on his site. Thanks again smeagol. Reading this has changed my approach as too how I was going to paint the RX-78-2. Just my [2cnts] worth.

Well heres my recent work.

Oh yea baby, you feel lucky punk! This thing just oozes fire power. Glad to see you respond to my request modelbuilder. To those out in FSM World, this is the fella that got me interested in the whole Gundam idea. Glad to see you post your build. I just want to point out a few details he added to this beast, 1st look close and you will see he added reactive armor to the chest area, right below the chest and on the armor plating of the legs. This is really very thoughtful, because these would be areas to hit to disable in a fire fight. 2nd check out the smoke grenade launchers on the shoulder armor fronts. Keep watching f/a really neat paint scheme on this APC w/major fire power. Welcome modelbuilder to the Gundam Build Thread.[H]

OK, I accept your challenge, lets see what ya got. But only if’n U ain’t skeer’d? [whstl]

What, I see U’r interested, what U got to throw in da pot? I bet you got a Gundam that needs building, what U say about that! [snWcm]
