Guess what i found!

You know those sprue cutters Model Master sells for $11.99? Well today I was at a craft store and I found the exact same thing, jsut with pink handels and under a different name for guess how much? $5.99! Yeah they are called something like bead cutters. So if you odnt believe me go and look. I jsut hope model master doesnt write me an angrey letter,.

Pink handles… Oh my!

Were they made by Xuron also? If yes, u got a great deal! Xuron cutters have this micro-shear technology that snips sprue connections and leaves a flat undamaged surface. By the way, what craft store did you go to?

No they are no Xuron but they are the same basic i dea and shape. They work jsut as well. I bought them at A.C. Moore they were in the jewlery dpeartment, I think they are used to cut the backs off of metal buttons. But yeah they work real well.

Hmm… on the plus side, with the pink handles it shouldn’t be too hard to find them.

Yeah plus they give a nice atmosphere to the olive drab and earth colars of the armor modeling. haha

You can also get the Radio Shack 5" Nippy Cutter. It’s a flush cutter designed for circuit boards. I have one and it works well. Only $3.99. Their catalog number is 64-1833. Oh, and the handle is a manly red.
But in the Xuron’s defense, I think the Xuron is sharper.

HEY,
I have found that most of my modelling tools were made for something else entirely. Is it like that for the rest of you guys? And if you dont like the color, paint it. Hey, you could even customize them. Can you imagine camo sprue cutters?

As a collegue here said the hobby tag increases price by 3000%!!!

Two thoughts on this

  1. The long legged one who has shared my home for 35 years taught me very early on that it doesn’t have to come from a hobby shop and color doesn’t matter if it does what I want it to do (especially if its cheaper). [:P]

  2. When I first became an aircraft mechanic, I was told that if I took a board 30 ft long, cut it into 3 equal lengths and then take one to the lumber yard, one to the boat yard and one to the airport. I would get $1.00 a foot at the lumber yard, $25.00 a foot at the boat yard and $50.00 at the airport. Go figure. [^][^][^]

Got Sharpie?

Yep,

I bought my cutters in the craft store also. They are in the “Bead” section for cutting the wire. Excellent buy!

By the way, mine have Purdy Purple handles [:I]

Good tools are everywhere - you just have to keep your eyes and mind open. These days, being creative about expanding my tool box has added a new perk to my hobby.

Lately, I found quite a bit of my more useful tools in my wife’s drawer in the bathroom. She’ll probably kill me when she finds out. For instance …

  • Fresh eye makeup applicators work well positioning and smoothing decals.
  • Nail polishing boards work wonders on scratched clear parts.
  • Emory boards make quick work of shaping filler.
  • Large nail clippers replace expensive sprue cutters.
  • Wooden cuticle sticks work well for burnishing Bare Metal Foil
  • Metal cuticle tools replace putty applicators pretty effectively

Pink, shmink! If it gets the job done and saves you money, then you will have more to spend on adding to your stash of new kits!
