Hasegawa’s A-10 is another one of my unfinished builds I am striving to complete after sitting idle for years. The access ladder can be built extended and the kit instructions are calling for H24 Orange Yellow. Not knowing what color this was, I tried adding some yellow to some orange and came up with a color not fit for human eyes. Finally did some research and found this:
One reference called for dropping 3 drops of red into a 1/4 oz. bottle of flat yellow. I believe plain yellow would be too bright to match this, so I am going to try it. Any thoughts otherwise?
I wouldn’t add anything to the bottle… I’d just decant a few drops of yellow into my pallette, then add a little red from a puddle next to it until I got the shade I wanted…
That is some COOL custom artwork on the inside of the crew ladder access panel! I think that might be hard to duplicate on a model but it sure would look neat. Just a thought …
If you ever do any yellowwings Naval aircraft, Gunze-Sangyo’s Orange Yellow is reckoned by some to be the best match for the yellow that the Navy used for the upper surfaces of the wings. I’ve also read that Chrome Yellow is too bright, closer to the yellow that the Army Air Corps used between the wars. From color photos from the period, I think that’s accurate. Chrome Yellow is closer to the color the navy designated for the tail feathers for the Lexington’s air group.
The color was still available, the last time I checked, I think through Hobby Link in Japan.
I just wanted to report that I tried the 3 drop formula in a new 1/4 oz. bottle of Testors flat yellow (the little square bottle) and mixed it up. I found the result to be pleasing to my eye looked about right. Is it a match for the GS orange-yellow? I don’t know, but for my little crew ladder, I think it is perfect! I was surprised as to just how far 3 drops of red went as it changed the color of the yellow bottle completely!
