As most of ya know I ordered a Tamiya P-51 and a big assortment of goodies that will be my first foray into resin and PE. Well Her scheme will be Petie 3rd. I bought Monograms P-51d as a testbed for my scheme, making it into Mrs Marilyn just like Joes. Working out how I am gonna do the paint job over the NMF.
Well the monogram started out not meaning a whole lot to me, it had a specific task but as I near completion I found I was trying harder on it, especially after masking it for almost an hour with Tamiya Tape and microfilm, I didnt even paint the wheelwells!!!. Well pulling the tape off I was pleasantly happy with the results and dang it now I like this bird for more then a testbed. Alls well up to now… the decals. Ok this is older Mono kit and all buty sheesh the decals are grumpy. that long red demarcation line between the od and nmf on the nose, one side good the other the evil decal from satan!!! Cut my losses on that onesince its maybe 85% in the correct place. Ok that set green and yellow checker decal for the nose… oh yeah did not fit… at all. Had to cut a slice in it, microl set it, rinse and repeat next quarter inch, almost felt like swanny for a second moving sooo slowly, carefully. really taught me patience again. Well I got it on there and mostly looking good, but just frustrated at the thick, fast taking to decals that came with that kit. I’ll have pics soon for ya all.

the decals on my monogram A-37 sucked as well. nobody noticed (or didn’t mention it) that about half of them were missing!!!LOL every one of them frosted really badly. we want grill ya too bad about it jeff, let it rip tater chip. later.
I’ll have some pic tomorrow for ya all. I went on to apply some more decals after I posted this, using my new scalpal I just got to cut out the decals and make slices in them to make them fit better and got the first finger on my right hand… ow. Stuck myself good.
Doh!!.. I hate when that happens. I hereby award you the “Purple Band-aid” Woodbeck for injuries sustained while trying to salvage bad decals.
Sounds like monogram kits are like Tamiya ones. Great kits with s**thouse decals.

Well she is all decaled up. Got to the tail, had that red pony ready to go and wait a tick… is that rudder yellow??? Yes it is!!! Hmm mine seems to be od. Sigh. Ok so I mask the frikkin thing off once more to paint the frikkin rudder yellow. Everything is going fine. I have all kings of tape and microfilm on it again. Get the painting done and pull the tape off and what do I see?? Take a friggin guess!!! Oh yea… a fine yellow mist of yellow overspray on my od. Omg, about gave Marilyn her maiden flight. I cussed a bit, stomped around, saying a few choice things about Marilyn then sat down, cut my loss and finished up the decals. You guys will get to see a class 1, grade a example of mist over spray in those pics coming up… dang it all.

Jeff: Does this Monogram pony have those old, thick silkscreen jobs Mono used in the mid-80s to sometime in the 90s? They were thick and very shiny on the sheet, and looked like garbage, because by using silkscreen process, things like the skin of a pinup girl on nose art, and other areas of color, were actually ruined because they used what printers call Ben Day dots (named for the inventor). Ben Day dots are what make up a photograph on you daily newspaper, like pixels from the stone age. I’d use red stripes from the spares box from some old turbine or prop warning stripe.

Yeah that be them… but this is the '98 rerelease, with old decals. My finger is feeling better.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been pretty lucky when I have that overspray accident taking a Q-tip dabbed in alcohol (even on regular MM enamels, if the overspray is thin enough) and it often works. If not, even a tiny bit of turpentine will take it off without ruining your paint job if you are careful. Like you said, this was a prototype to avoid these problems on the real deal.

Jeff… if my screw ups looked that great I’d be soooooo happy. I know the feeling though, to have something that’s going really well take the turn… it doesn’t matter how small or un-noticeable it is… you know it’s there and that’s all that matters.

All you can do is try to learn from it…Heck I screw every model I build worse then that and those are the good ones. The way I see it is if I was to build every model perfect well then I could quit my day job and build models for a living. But alas thats not to be so Ill build em for my wife and I to enjoy!
