Normally I hang out in the Armor area, but I have a thing for the pre-war Navy. Any Interest?
Ya got me!
There’s no subject more near and dear to my heart. I just got back int o modeling and have yet to begin my first kit, but I can’t pass up an opportunity like this. I’ll no doubt be the black sheep of the group, but like they say - “It could be that the sole purpose of your life is to serve as an example to others”.
Count me in. I have no idea what kit I’ll do yet, but what better reason to go out and get one? [:-^]
well I have a TBD-1 Devastator that is almost finished with exception of the prop. And alot of pics of the build on Photobucket. And I have a pair of Goshawk fighters in 1/72 scale and ancient Revell kits one from 1978 and the other is from 1968.
Bumping.
I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t care if it ends up just being the 3 of us - I’m psyched about a Yellow Wing GB. It’s only been a day, so it’s too early to tell the interest level; but I’m already planning my build. I’m too rusty to try either a biplane or a vac kit, so I think I’ll go with the Monogram 1/48 Devastator. Not sure which unit yet, though.
well you could try Torpedo 5 off of the USS Yorktown.
[:O]Oooooooo this sounds good.
I have a F3F thats been sitting on the top shelf for awhile that I’ve been needing an excuse to build.
Count me in.
(Painting with yellow…yikes.)
Count me in, too. Naval A/C of any vintage are my thing, and I have quite a selection in my stash for this period. I’d start with some monoplane, and maybe try a biplane or vacuform after that, if there’s time.
I realize you haven’t set the GB parameters yet, but I need two answers to help me choose a subject:
Will this be restricted to OOB?
Will you allow USMC/USCG aircraft as well as USN?
Looking for more news soon.
Dick
p.s. How do you pronounce your name? [%-)]
I ordered a 1/48th Curtiss SBC-3 kit from Rare Plane Detective and the guy is supposed to send it to me next week (he cashed the check already).
If all goes OK (he seems to “suddenly get called out of town” at the most “inconvenient moments”) I would like to enter it.
It seems that he takes the order money and then goes out and finds the item[yuck]
If not, I might have another, but I will be happy to let you guys know how this goes with him first.
Tom [C):-)]
Tell us more, Tom - does this guy have a website? How are his prices?
is this the address
Hello All,
First off I would like to join in on the “Yellow Wings Navy GB” once you have it offically set, it is one of my favorite eras of aviation. [:)]
As for the Rare Plane Detectives I recently bought 3 planes off of him when he was at a model sellers show in New Jersey earlier this year. I purchased the 1/32 Hasegawa Curtiss BF 2C-1, 1/32 Hasegawa Boeing P-12E and the 1/32 Hasegawa Boeing Peashooter P-26A all for a total of about $36.00. Great quality kits, they have been in buisness for quite awhile and know moved to Las Vegas not to long ago, but he does travel the country selling at local events.
I am sure you’ll get your order, and it will be good quality also.
Cheers,
Thom
Nice choices, Thom - I have all the 1/32 Hasegawa ‘tween-war’ kits in my stash. I built the P-12E once and it didn’t turn out half bad - though I wasn’t too particular at the time as to colors - or painting at all, for that matter. I left everything the color of the plastic - yellow wings and tail, and OD fuselage - and just slapped the decals on. I just painted the details - cockpit, landing gear, propeller. The one thing I was proud of was that I painted the rudder stripes by hand. I have to dig it out and see if I actually did as good a job as I thought I had (this is going back 20+ years).
I didn’t have nearly as much luck with the BF2C kit I built as a teenager, though. The parts didn’t go together very well, and there was no clear indication of how the stability ring (under the cowling, in front of the fuel tank) was supposed to be placed, and it was impossible to get it to stay on at all, anyway. The decals weren’t too easy either - at least back then, for my experience level - the fuselage stripe and numbers for both sides were all one single decal, very awkward to handle. It dried before I was able to get it aligned properly, so I just took it off and chucked it. I have no fond memories of that kit, but I really want another shot at it.
I’m pretty sure I tried the F4B-4 too - I just don’t remember anything about how it turned out.
Currently have 16 in the collection, from 1/32 to 1/72.
Looks like we have 7 people interested in this Yellow Wings GB. Is that typically enough? I don’t want this GB to fade away!
Acording to Burns guide, his prices are fair.
If you did not know, John Burns wrote the book called ‘PAK-20’, literally listing all plastic model kits produced in the 20th century, and “beyond” (to present). His ad is in the FSM mag. classifieds. I bought his book number 750 of 1000, which means once he sells number 1000, he is “out of business”. I highly recommend it to any serious collector/builder to keep you from “getting burned”.
So far my experience with Garrity has gone like this:
He had the model on his website last fall, while he was in Gulfport (I live not far away in Louisiana), and so I called him to see about getting it. Well, at that time his did not like shipping UPS,(I don’t know why), so while we were “going around about this” over the phone, and he was being difficult, he suddenly interjected “Oh, let me check something”, and he took a minute, and then said “Oh, I just sold that kit yesterday”. OK [:-^]
So then he took my phone number, promising to call me when he finished moving his business to 'Vegas, since he had a warehouse full there. That was last fall.
So, since he still carries a large ad in FSM mag, this issue on P. 12, recently I sent him an e-mail, indicating that I was going to have to report him as a subscriber, and suddenly he said he found one in New Jersey.
He got back, contacted me, and then said I had to get him payment “in 7 days”, so I “busted tail” and sent him a Priority Mail package with a money order in it. After he got it, I called to verify, which he did, and then asked him about another kit, which he said he had he had and could send me as well, with an additional $20.00 payment. So again I “busted tail” to get him the rest of the money, only to find out that when it made it to him, he was on the East Coast again, under the alabi of “having to go to his father-in-law’s funeral”, and could not ship until he got back (of course, this is not far from the “gold-find” stash he bought in Jersey).
So this left me out over $75.00, and hoping he really would make it back and send me the kits. [%-)]
After this I really do not feel like doing business with him anymore, nor can I recommend him due to his “fuzzy business eithics”, that is:
- Advertising something that he either did not have, or did not want to sell to me and removed it to see how much he could get on E-Bay.
- Not getting back to me in a timely manner after taking my phone number.
- Skipping town after receiving my money, without shipping anything at all at the time (legally, in business, this is known as “fraud”, a crime persuible and punishible by any local metro police department).
Also, he still has his phone listed in Biloxi, Missippi, although he “officially” has relocated to Las Vegas, which makes me wonder if he has “owned up” as a small business there, paying the various license fees, etc.
Now I am still hoping he owns up to his word and does ship me my package this week.
If it does I will let you know, but for me in the future, he has to compete with the son of a local hobby store owner I am negotiating with, who is selling his stash a little at a time, and then I still have to get over the feeling that I no longer wish to deal with him, especially with all his nonsense.
Sorry, although I would like to, I cannot honestly not tell you a better report of him.
Tom [C):-)]
I can do more then one entry if that helps:
- Douglas Devastator (A neat old Monogram kit)
- Grumman F3F (Either an Accurate Minitures or an old 1/32 Monogram kit)
- Grumman F4F-1(A Tamiya kit built as an early yellow wing Hellcat).
- Boeing P-26
- Curtiss Sparrowhawk (A Williams Brothers kit)
- Boeing P-12
- Curtiss F4B-4 (I am thinking of doing this as a Chinese Hawk III)
Did you know you can find a color photo of a Curtiss SB2C in yellow wings on a Russian website?

Tom:
I am sorry to hear all the trouble you’ve had dealing with Rare Palne, I hope you get your order soon and it works out all in your favour.
Don:
Are you going to MosquitoCon on the 7th?
Cheers,
Thom
MosquitoCon? I’ve been hoping to - I’ve never been to it before. have you? Right now I don’t see anything going on that day to prevent me, and hopefully it will stay that way.
OK
After another e-mail pointing out to Jeff that his and my defination of “good business practice” were not the same, he “went the extra mile” and actually did a UPS 2-Day the shipment to me and it got to me in good order today.
I got both the Aurora 1/48 SBC-3 as well as an old Monogran 1/32 F3F.
My main comment is that neither of these are “mint condition kits”. In both kits, most of the small parts are off the trees and loose in an unsealed box.
I went ahead and paid the higher “old kit price” for the Aurora, since with all it’s faults, it is not only cheaper, it is still in every way superior to the more recent Classic Airframes release, with the only exception being the decals, not because of aging, but the national insignias are horrible, even if they were new.
The red dot in the star is off-center for the upper wing decals and the lower wing decals are not round, but egg-shaped, and that is not due to aging. The squadron insignia looks like the only thing worth using (if I decide to), but for the stars, my stash sould do them fine, as well as my perferring to paint rather then apply a decal for the fuselage and upper wing stripes anyway.
The big plus about this kit is that all parts fit well with little or no filler, and it has a detailed double-row engine as well as full cockpit instrumentation.
The canopy is a little thick, but I would rather too thick then too thin and have a cracked eggshell mess on my hands, as with some later Monogram kits.
If you read the Classic Airframes SBC-3 kit review, it looks like construction-wise, the buyer would be almost as well off building from scratch, and kit price-wise way ahead.
I still have to pick through all the loose parts for the F3F to see if the intricate working landing gear parts are all there, but the decals look very good.

Tom:
Glad you got the order in.
Don:
I am planning on trying to go, if nothing gets in the way schedule wise.
Cheers,
Thom
