Group Build only Forum

Like the name says, what do you think? We who visit the armor forum, are kinda wanting a place only for sticky builds, because it takes up valuable space in the forum. what do you think? Also, I am not sure, but do you guys have a problem with “dead” GB’s cluttering up the forum?

beav, I proposed a new forum a few months back, a historical one, the members seamed to sort of like it. But it never went through. I don’t have an objection to that but you know I wonder if they give in to one of us they have to give in to all of us. They may have a limited number of links they can choose from. i just don’ know. I am sort of new to the Group Builds. i have only recently partaken in two, I started one of them. But I don’t mind the fact that they are there. I think you just come to live with them. Altough one other thing, one member proposed a Vietnam Group build. So with that said maybe that makes sense.

i browse the armor forum from time to time and i can see why the armor folks would like to rework the situation a little. i think it would work but as jim says the admin may have a limited framework to work with, i may be wrong. the other proposed solutions would work also. firm start and end time, pulling the “sticky” status after a set amount of dead or limited activity time, having them in a separate grouping within the individual forums. all of these were good ideas and would work. the only one that we the members have any control over is emailing the admin to have the “sticky” status removed.
i do however agree that a separate forum for group builds would work.

I vote YES for a forum only GB.
It was fun early…But to much clutter now.[:(]

I have to look for 6 to 7 page to look for FSM Group Build for 1/32 Bf-109G / Fw-190D-9 This place is a very busy place…Jeff_Herne’s GB is gone about 2 or 3 hours! I have to that bump it. I dont like that.[V]

Easy Co, I don’t understand what you mean by your last sentenece above.

I hope you all can firgive my ignorance here…but what’s the point?

Are group builds set up to see who can build the fastest? The best looking? The most highly detailed of a particular model? I guess I just don’t see why a deadline and such are required and why everyone needs to build the same kit.

Hmmm…perhaps I need to go crawl back under my rock for now huh? [X-)]

Seriously, I mean no offence whatsoever to anyone here, but I just don’t get it…

Wash away those bothersome stickies with new FORUM!
Yes, group builds cluttering up your screen will be a thing of the past!
Oh if only!
With the download times that I get out here it takes ages for the next screen to come up, if the first one, here on the Aircraft forum, is half full of stickies, then it seems I’m waiting for page two to come up too soon (does that make sense?)
So yes, lets get the group builds off on their own (or is that a contradiction in terms?) somewhere. Then again, with all the requests for help on here, are most of us involved in a group build in one way or another?

I dont like that “Bump it.” < . I have a Speech/language problems. Because a stroke.[:I]

We have had similar posts about separating the Group builds into another forum. I for one was all for it, and we were asking the administration if we could have a subforum to divide the GB posts but not take it out of that particular modelling subject forum. If I remember correctly, we were told that we could either keep things as they are or eliminate stickys altogether.

I feel that our only choice is to police our own group builds by having a firm start and stop date. If we want to have a grace period after the end date, then we shoud make it a specific time to keep all builds regulated.

Uilleann… reasons for having these builds are sharing the building with experienced and novice alike. One can ask questions and get prompt answers, as well as watch others progress with photos and converstation. And with Robert’s Sherman Group Build, we have a site where all can see the variety of finished models…it was fun and a learning experience for me as well.

Thanks Dan for the explanation - but just one more question…

Aren’t the reasons you mention here exactly the same that these forums exist at all? It just seems to be pretty redundant to me is all. Maybe I should start a group build on the F-117 and see how many folks would want to join? Is that how it generally goes?[:-^]
Bri~

Yes PLEASE!!!

No one likes to scroll more than they have to. Besides. I think there are more posts in all the group builds (aircraft and armour) than all the posts in the Space Forum. No offense Astronuts.

I see what you mean, Uilleann. Group builds get the benefit of staying at the top of each forum. And they should stay there until the end date. So if you wanted to start a F117 build then go right ahead. I would be one who join it. But I know nothing of that aircraft other than it is noisy and that it has a coating of RAM material on it! So I would be one who would learn much from you and others in doing that build…see how it works?

Personally, I’d like to see, I repeat possibly for the 3rd time, a separate forum for all GB. But my reasoning is not about cluttering. I think having GB under a GB Forum would promote cross-building, for instance I’ve never built a bike, and since I visit very rarely the car forum, it would be easy for me to miss the creation of another motorbike GB. Under it’s own separate forum, there would be more chances of me knowing when a motorbike GB is going to start again.

uilleann, two reasons for me to join a group build. one, within the group build only the subject is being built undoubtabely more than one will be building the same kit. (exception nmf and usmc gb) this means that if i have a prob. i can post my prob. and someone with the same kit will help me through it or give me a sugestion as to how to solve my prob. two, like going from a general subject to specific in any topic you are going to find that the techniques are highlighted. example i have been following the 262 build and the techniques, i think they will help me in my building.
these two reasons alone are good enough for me to join gb. this eliminates the need for me to wait for someone else to post a topic on what i am building or for me to start a topic that may be something covered two days to a month ago. the socialization and the pics are the gravy on the whole deal.

as far as the points raised. djmodels you bring up a good one. i force myself to browse the other forums once or twice a week so i dont lose myself in the a/c forum. i still miss quite a few good builds but i catch more now.
albert, the stickies do clutter up the forums but it also keeps the topics in the subject. easyco, i understand and feel your pain. went through the armor forum today and was halfway down the list on the first page before i found the one i was looking for. 'stickies" were the top half. the a/c forum in its own way is even worse. some of the proposed gb have not been “stickied” and to find them must be horrible on some days.
boybuddho has the only solution for us at the moment. email the admin and have those gb that have expired removed from the “sticky” status. the only way to get the proposed gb to a “sticky” status is to continue to email the admin.
sorry to be so long winded but i wanted to pull all the ideas together.

I agree with you 100%…but there will be ups and downs there as well. The armor guys are complaining that they have quite a few pages of group builds to sort through…I can’t really imagine you finding that bike GB any easier that way either. Soon people will be complaining about how the new GB forum needs to be split into subcategories again.

Edit- BTW I don’t generally have the problems you guys keep saying over and over. When I come to the forums I click on the “Since Last Visit” link, and generally everything is sorted by when the topic was last replied to since your last visit…also you can hit the “Today’s Active Topics” and see what’s been going on within the last 24 hours. That’s how I solved the GB Sticky problem when I first joined.
