group build no badge

I’ve noticed that on a lot of group builds that once the build is announced there is a mad rush to sign up, for a few days there a lot of interest. then three months later a lot of , “this is my build.” I would like to try something different.

  1. Everyone builds the same model (aircraft, scale, manufacturer) AM and scatch build encouraged. paint, decals and finish are up to the builder. Model to be decided ,after a group has formed, as democratically as possible.( I, being the king, have final say , HA HA HA HA HA HA , oops sorry, just kidding)

  2. Everyone must agree to be active members of the build.

  3. A time period will be slatted for research, during this time no building will be allowed. Post will concern reference material (not just web sites), color recommendations, AM parts and sources. In other words we will help one another prepare for the build.

  4. When the build starts we will build together (i.e. 1st week for the cockpit ,2nd week wheel wells, etc.) That way the pros can help us want-a- bes with problems as they are encountered.

5 If you use AM parts post a small how-to tutorial, and all questions are allowed no matter how many time it appears in other post. (i.e “What kind of glue do I use?”)

6 Everyone who joins must post a photo of the last model completed.

  1. A GB badge will be e-mailed to those who complete the group build.

Thats the idea, I basically want to put a group on the same bench, so we can discuss the lousy fit and how to fix it. I hope some of the pros will join to make this a successful experiment.( “We will be the example that all future civilizations follow when organizing a GB.ha ha ha ha h”, oops there I go again.)

Any takers?

Actually what you describe is a more traditional GB (in fact that might be a good name for the GB), everybody starts with the same kit so others can (learn, teach, see what can be done with the kit etc).

The strict time frame is where I think the most trouble will occur, one of the reasons most GB have such long periods is because many of us have variable build schedules, have too much on our plates already, or build haphazardly (I jump from one build to the next, and usually have a minimum of 3-4 builds going at any time).

The badge thing used to be after a build was completed, it seems to have become acceptable to use the badge during the build to help advertise the build. Personally I liked the after you finish thing about the badges but the advertise the build angle kind of makes sense. I just go with the flow so now I add the badge when I’ve posted my first progress. Getting the badge at the end is fine with me.

I could be interested depending on the final subject but the tight build schedule would probably kill me, as I usually binge build.

Nice idea, but rules 3, 4 & 6 are probably too restrictive, especially #4. Group Builds are supposed to be for the fun of building and comraderie, not trying to follow a list of rules that narrowly restricts participation. I am particpating in several GBs now and my time to work on models is sporadic at best. I would not be able to tie myself down to that restrictive of a time table. Just my opinion.
