I remember it all too well. I had a childhood friend who was part of the Coast Guard search.
It’s odd because I didn’t remember, reading about ships and all.
It’s become the stuff of legend,
It was so long and storms of that severity are rare so it was just a tragic happenstance.

Being from frostbite falls mn myself I remember it well. I was almost 15. The song haunts me and is one of my favorites to this day.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down

Ah, yes. Since I went to school in Michigan’s UP, I have been fascinated by lakers. I well remember the news that day. I have two models of the Fitz, a 1:700 resin one, and a 1:192 scratchbuilt half hull version on my den wall. Have built four other large scratchbuilt lakers- working on a sail schooner laker now.

I remember the song quite well, as they played it regularly on the radio station that my mom used to listen to back then. I also recall reading about when they found the wreck on the lake floor using remote submersibles and the photos that were taken.
I also went to school up in Houghton for a couple years. Was in the Marquette area last month and we discussed the sinking. If only they had made Whitefish Bay.

Michigan Tech?
At the time the song came out I had no idea that it was about a real event. I was based at Little Rock and spent a lot of time at work, not paying much attention to the news outside of Arkansas. It was a long time before I found out the history of the song. I may have to get a model of of the ship now. Who has them?
There really is a Frostbite Falls? I thought that it was a made up place for Rocky & Bullwinkle.
