Great Find This Weekend

I finally scored a Defiant this weekend and it didn’t break the bank. Classic Airframes 1/48th Defiant is priced around 50-60 bucks and I found one for 25. It comes in a smaller box and said European edition on it. I was pretty happy to find it cheaper but I admit I’m nervous about the build as it contains resin and photo etched parts. The canopy and turret are vacuform which really has me freaked. In my stash I have some armor that contains PE parts but I admit I have no real knowledge of them. Stupid question number 1, are PE parts pre painted or do you have to paint them? ( I haven’t studied the kit yet) Number 2, Do resin and PE parts require a diffrent kin d of glue? Thanks for any help.

p.s. Bought another P-39. Including the one on my bench and the two on the way from Great Models that makes 4 in my collection. I do have a thing for the underdogs!

Zar, some photoetch is pre painted while others are not. You have to check your particular kit. My guess is that your PE is not prepainted. As for glueing resin and PE, you must use either superglue or epoxy.

As for being freaked out, here’s what I recommend. Try to find a cheaper kit (those old 1/48 Revell/Monogram kits fit the bill nicely) and purchase an Eduard ZOOM set. This PE is prepainted and usually only has the details for the cockpit. But here’s the nice part… They’re fairly cheap! So that way you won’t feel pressured to do a great job the first time. Then you can work up from there! Good luck.

[#ditto] Very good advice. Also have a look at www.Swannysmodels.com in his tips section. Theres loads of good stuff to do with working with PE and resin.

Good luck and show us your efforts.

Thanks for those tips. Sounds like a plan.
