Greased Lightning

Well here it is guys and gals.
She is 1/48 Hasegawa P38L with in the box decals for Major Richard Bong’s
P38L.

I only added PE seat ,seatbelts and brass tube for the cannon tips.
She is finished in Alcad2 Polished Aluminium with Gunze Mr Color
for the non NMF bits.

I love this plane and am happy to share it with you all.[:)]

Great job! Ouestion for you: What happens to the Alclad when you clearcoat over it (to seal your decals)? Does it dull the bare metal look at all?

Thank Modelnerd,
No the decals have not been sealed yet.Thought I 'll take a few pics first.
Future is ok but from what I hear dulls the shine a bit. I am gonna try Gunze’s Mr Color clear.

Excellent work obiwan. A very nice add to any collection. Thanks for sharing. Keep em coming.

Excellent looking lightning obiwan and in the markings of one of my favorite aces.

hey looks awsome, only im confused.

Did Bong have two planes or did he have the same one repainted?

In photos and the one at the museum dedicated to him, his plane has red markings on the tips. and i can’t tell, i think you do, but it also had flat black anti-glare panals.

lookin good though

Excellent finish on that Lightning! Darn thing looks like real metal! Guess I’m gonna have to try that Alclad sometime.

Thanks ,Rick ,falcon039 ,Dave Teows, Awood23 ,John ,Chris ,Bob Raymount ,
9x19mm, mandrake ,aerialresponder and tupr for all your kind comments
everything you see was learnt from helpfull modellers.

aerialresponder ,the red wingtip version is Bong’s P38J “Marge”
the model I built represents his P38L.You can see both planes
in FSM’s May 2003 issue.
So its 2 different planes.Good question too ,I couldn’t find any pics of his “L”

obiwan – great job on one of my favorite planes! That finish is unbelievable . . . .

That metal finish looks fantastic Obiwan. You’ve done a great job. I’d write more, but I’m out of superlatives.
