for new kit release news.

Academy’s kit is now showing in their online catalog, along with drawings of the parts trees. A potential inaccuracy some may want to fix has been noted here:

Take a look at the parts breakdown and look for the mainmast parts on the funnel. Something very incorrect about it. It’s a simple cross while pictures show that it should be a tripod with two yardarms.

HELLO everyone , I haven,t heard anyone mention that years and years ago AURORA had a model of this ship .I think it may have been 1/700 or maybe a little bigger. It was molded in dark (dunkelgrau ?) And seemed to be a not bad little model to build . The thing that stands out ,in my mind today is how overlarge the armor belt seemed to be . From a distance she almost looked like a U-BOAT!!! During that time I acquired some early AIRFIX stuff that a friend in the U.S.A.F. talked me out of . He wanted the GRAF SPEE but I wouldn,t part with her . The spee was about the same scale as the airfix stuff (gosh they were small ). Oh .well I guess I,ll have to get her in 1/350 . tankerbuilder p.s. I rarely build with weathering as I like the “fresh from the yard” look. catchya later …

The Aurora Graf Spee was 1/600 scale and, from what I remember, wasn’t a bad kit at all.

Bill Morrison

HI BILL! The one thing I really remember about that kit is how easy it went together ! Everything fit the first time AND the parts ,for back then ,were well molded and in some cases very delicate! I was tickled because of all those LEETLE TEENSY portholes!!! That was the first time ,outside of the REVELL “BUCHANAN”, that I saw portholes on a warship (sorry,I forgot the ARIZONA ). The thing I would probably like to see is three standard scales for all the world,s shipmodels . Those scales being 1/200 , 1/350 and 1/700 . WHY ?? That way the majority of us could have the scale we like for shelf ported models . I would buy larger scale for operational models (I build them mostly scratch anyway in 1/48 scale!!) The quantity of really great stuff in 1/350 just tickles me , I just wish they would do the support vessels , and civilian stuff too . I could then have my whole house full of models ,Like I did as a youngster! No matter ,I hope everyone out there even those who sink ships, ( YOU know who you is ) enjoys the hobby like I do .I am very glad to have this skill , and will do what I can to inspire others . tankerbuilder

Well, that would be no fun! Where would you find a 1/411 seaplane tender?

If I had to choose I would say 1/96, 1/192, 1/384 and so on. Why? Because those are the scales of most of my drawings of ships, and hey I’m an Architect, I can’t help myself.

A review of the Academy kit has just been posted:

very cool this is

Pics of the Trumpeter kit are also available here - though I really do wonder if Trumpeter’s version REALLY IS worth another $50+US!!

I picked up the Academy kit yesterday from a LHS for $40. It looks great in the box. This thread will help with the painting. I love that final camo scheme she wore.

I trust you had read about the main Turret issues with both the Academy & Trumpeter kits first?

http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=45727

No, I did not read about them until you posted the link. Thank you for doing so. I will remove the molded on chevron on my kit. Most of the issues listed there (rivets, lips over covers etc.) , are more nit picky than I care for currently. I am still new to ship models as an adult. Over the past 26 years my main areas have been aircraft, armor, and figures. I am only building my first ship now since high school in 1981 or so. My read on all this is that neither kit is correct, and both have various issues. Even if the Trumpeter kit was 100% dead bang on, I can not justify the cost of that kit. I have too many other responsiblities to worry about. In the end, I am sure I can make this look like a reasonable likeness of the real ship.

stikpusher - That has to be one of the best post I have ever read in this section of the forum ! Isnt that is what the hobby is all about.

Great post! Lots of info that really helps! Thanks fellows!
