While looking at pictures of peoples workbenches, I noticed that some like to model on a small piece of wood. Is this better than say a self healing mat? For the people that use wood, why do you use it?
Not sure, but this may be a holdover for folks who started building flying models- the stick and tissue kind, where one “pins down” the framework of balsa sticks. One needs a working surface that is easy to stick pins into. Personally, I have a three foot by one foot piece of particle board with one foot square cork tiles glued to it for when I build that kind of model. My regular building surface is particle board with contact paper over it so I can “renew” it periodically.
What you are probably seeing is a “presentation” stand for taking pics of WIPS…like wildbill76 uses…
I don’t use wood because it’s too soft to cut on. Particle board would be harder. I use mats.
I work on a wood table that is not quite a butcher block-type deal but still thick and sturdy, but I don’t use it as a cutting surface. When paint is involved, I’ll throw a piece of scrap cardboard down to work on.

My workbench is an old plywood board atop a long narrow bookcase-like piece of furniture. On the plywood, I laid a heavy plastic advertising poster for bare-root rose bushes face-down (the back side is white). The inevitable little spills of paint, glue and so on don’t bother it. When it’s time to cut, I grab a small flat piece of clear plastic that I use as a cutting board, plus under the cutting board, I’ll slip a small piece of box cardboard if the part I’m cutting is white.
I’m not touching this headline for fear of being banned. LOL [:D]
I work on a sheet of glass luv it…and easy clean up.
