Got this tiger by the tail!! (F-5E pics)

hello fellows!! here is my finished italeri 1/48 F-5E Tiger II. this was my first purchase of an italeri kit and was a little disappointed at this one as it had raised panel lines and rivets that would probably be about the size of basketballs if it were 1/1. after seeing this, i decided to hang her from the cieling instead of waste my valueable and sparce shelf space with this low detail kit. she’s straight out of the box with no fancy fixins so enjoy. i painted her with mm enamels with about 5 coats of future, dark umber wash, decals, and then 2 coats of mm acryl clear matte. i made my fair share of silly mistakes on her and some decals and parts are missing but i’m not tellin’ where they are so if you find something wrong pat yourself on the back and keep you trap shut!![:p][:D] later.

p.s.
as you can probably tell, i’m still playing with my camera and learning it too so some of the pics have a different tint to them so just bare with me.

in the 2 bottom photos im trying to show the dark umber wash in my attempt to rescribe the raised panel lines to recessed ones.

That looks great Chris! What did you use to rescribe the lines? I always liked the F-5, sharp looking bird and you treated her well.

Very nice job on the camo [tup]. Did you use an Aztek [:D] ? Seriously, looks like you are getting very good with the Iwata AB. If you like Tigers, Classic Air Frames just released an F-5A in SEA camo and it is probably the best Tiger kitted so far. They are considering an F-5E later this year. Thanks for sharing. Keep em coming.

Very Nice Chris! [tup]

Keep up the good work buddy.

Mike

Hey Chris,
Even though you were disappointed w/ the kit, it turned out really great. I especially like how the dark umber wash turned out.
So how did yaw like rescribing the lines on her?? LOL[:p] BTW what method did you use to rescribe??
Over all apperance is great even if your going to hang her!!
Flaps up, Mike

Silly me, Chris over all how was the fit?? Just wondering b/c I may want to pick this one up just to play around w/ rescibing panel lines!!
Thanks again.
Flaps up, Mike

looks nice mate. keep up the good work

thanks for the positive feed back fellows, i really appreciate it.

josh, i used a bare metal foil scribing tool but later i caught a thread over in the techniques section on this forum and took a sewing needle and chucked it into my pin vise and with an erasing template, i went to town. the sewing needle makes a much thinner panel line that looks alot better in my opinion.

thanks rick for the compliment on the airbrushing. and yes, i’ve already been eye balling the classic air frame kit! my LHS had an open boxed one the last trip i took and it looked really cool in the box.

the fit on a 1 to 10 scale i would rate this one as about a 6 or 6.5 range. i used several coats of squadron green on the belly to get the wheel well covers to match up with the bottom and openings. ofcourse, if you put it on the shelf, you could skip all that jazz.

once again, thanks for the kind words guys, it encourages me to keep on keepin’ on. (you really have to twist my arm to get me over to the work bench ya know)[;)] i’m just glad murphy left my place for awhile and is bothering someone else!! later.

looks good to me. nice job.

joe

They’re Grrrrrrrrrreat!

(Oh c’mon, ya’ll know someone was bound to say it!)

Seriously though, that’s a sweet looking Tiger you’ve got going there.

thanks joe and trigger 74. glad you like it. later.

Nice camo job, Salty! Alot more ambitious & better looking than the boring natural metal finish on my 1/48 F-5. Those who dare & risk all should be commended even if they fall short of their expectations. If this is one of your
disappointments I’d like to see some of your successes.

Even if the kit was poor, you turned it into a very eye-pleasing model! Well done!

Beautiful. I’ve felt that the F5 was probably one of the best looking modern aircraft. It’s so sleek and beautiful, and you did an excellent job of modelling one.
By the way, those rescribed lines turned out very nice on the upper fuselage and wings [:)]

Superb painting Chris. I was wondering if there is a tamiya, revell or academy kit for an F5 since this is the fighter that our air force are using and planning to build one.

LOL. unfortunetly, this is the only successful project that i can actually display ive had out of about a half dozen kits!! murphy’s been on the prowl here lately but like a say, i shook him for a while and finished this one with minimal screw ups. the only dissappointing thing about it is the raised panel lines and rivets, i fairly pleased with everything else. thanks for your comments.

thanks dj, i certainly enjoy staring at it hanging from my cieling.

thanks zokissima, i too think it is a sleek looking aircraft. its one of my favorite jet aircraft.

thanks sigman, i had a chance to look at accurate miniatures 1/48 scale F-5 and it looks great in the box!! they include an aftermarket resin cockpit and some PE parts with the kit. its close to 50 bucks though so it’ll be a while but i’m planning to build on for the shelf soon with sea cammo, and the air forces three color blue scheme as well. later.

Hey what colors did you use on that thing?

Wow that really is an impressive work, saltydog. Good job.

Is the decal on … missing? LOL. Just kidding…I don’t have the slightest idea which one.

josh, i used mm enamel sand, military brown, and dark tan. the 5th picture from the top is the correct representation of the true color of the bird. i dont know how i got that yellow tint on the rest of the photos.

LOL. dwight, if you’ll notice the small “02” decal on the very top of the vertical stablizer on the top photo, the next pic down from the right side of the model you notice there is no “02”. that one tore as i was moving it into place and i couldn’t salvage it. also, the red dot on the spine of the aircraft is supposed to be 2 red dot decals. the pitot tube is from an F-16 as i lost the kit pitot tube as soon as i cut her free from the sprue tree. last and not least, i forgot all about installing the arrester hook, but i dont have any photos of the bottom side anyway. later.
