Good wash for Mr. Color

Hi Guys,

Can anyone can recommend a good wash? I am using Mr. Color paints, if you don’t mind if you happen to recommend a Do it your self kind of wash share the ration please.

Is Mr Color enamel or acrylic.If enamel,you need to protect it with an acrylic clear overcoat,then you may use enamel or oils for wash.

If is is acrylic,then it standup to oils or enamels on its own,just no acrylic washes.

If you mix your own,it’s usually 90-10% thinner to paint

Many companies make premixed: Mig Productions,Mig Ammo,AK are some that come to mind.

Thank you for the answer, and you’re so right didn’t say what kind, it is the enamel type, the Mr. Hobby Mr. Color. Also you mean 90% thinner and 10% Paint, right?

Mr Color is more of a lacquer than an enamel. Its’ thinner will attack most other paint types, so I would be leery of using it for a wash.

I was thinking of using either Testors or Tamiya, I am not to familiar with washes so I really want to get some practice so all your help is really appreciated

I would recommend Testors enamels as best of those two for washes. Acrylics have a tendency to dry too quickly and be difficult to clean up when used as a wash. If you are going to use Testors over a Mr. Color base you should be fine. Just thin it with normal paint thinner or turpentine and have at it.

I also have used Testors enamel successfully for washes. Also agreee that 90/10 is a good starting point. Try on a piece of painted scrap and vary thinner as needed.

In most cases black is too stark a color to use for washes. With the exception of places like engine grilles & screens, machine guns, or some similar items or areas. In most other cases a color such as Burnt Umber or Dark Brown or Dark Gray will work just fine. Since you are using dissimilar paint types, between the Mr Color and Testors enamels, a gloss coat is not absolutely necessary, but it will help washes flow better. Without the Gloss coat in between, you can actually use a wash to alter the overall hue of the base color, especially on a flat base color. Like Don said above, try a little bit of testing before you try it on your current prize project.
