I’m doing a MiG group build on another site and thought I’d share this one here. Not quite finished yet but I’m to the point where I’m comfortable sharing what I have so far.
I’m building 2 of Revell’s 1/48 MiG-21 PF’s except in a digital scheme, different camo’s for each bird. The first one (pictured below) was meant to be a desert scheme but a couple of the paints were quite different shade than what the rattle can and model master’s website said they were (airbrush is still broken).
To head off any questions, here’s how I did it and the end result (if you only want to see it) is at the very bottom of this post.
First off I sprayed Model Master’s Modern Sand as the base color…and lightest color in the camo.
Next off, to get the squares in the digital camo, I used some masking tape that was 4.0 mm wide…on my first model (Revell’s F4U-4) I tried digital on, I used 8.0mm wide and it was really too wide. This brand of tape also has 2.0 mm wide which I believe could also be used and someday may try that.
Anyways, I would cut some off and tape it on the mat…
Then using the exacto cut some off at appox. this size from the non cutting edge down. I guess one could use scissors, but the only scissor I have for modeling are slightly curved and I wanted to get square edges as much as I could…
This first one below is not a very good example, one edge is slanted, which is bound to happen, but you can get the idea…also, it is a good idea to vary the lengths at which you cut, after all digi camo is not perfect cookie cutter squares…
This is what it looked like before the second color…
Second color was Model Master’s Light Earth…very different from the shade indicated on the rattle can and also online…
Before you put the third color on, repeat the process of taping and masking. Third color was Testor’s Olive Drab…this one was more olive than drab…but I liked the result…this is with the final masking tape before the final color…
fAnd below is the final product…Again, I had originally wanted this to be a desert…but the final color is SAC brown (or tan can’t remember) but it is clearly an olive color…no tan whatsoever. If I had known that I would’ve put more of the flat earth in it. But it turned out to my liking anyways.
A final note…it would’ve been easier to do this with an airbrush because I would be able to mix colors and know what they look like before going on the model. With rattlecans it is different I can only say that what I will do on this MiG’s twin is to test spray the paints before I put them on the model so I can use the program “Paint” and figure out what ratios I like.
Thanks for looking, any questions I’ll be glad to answer…
