This is a strange question for a modeling forum, but I seem to recall reading that many of the US pilots prefered the RAF goggles. As far as I can tell, the RAF goggles seem to have a corner about half way across the lens where it turns about 45 degrees. Does anybody know if this affected the vision? Also, why exactly did the US pilots prefer the British goggles? Just wondering if anybody had heard the answers to this question . . . ?
The AAF goggles appear to be rubber framed and have come in a few different models
The RAF goggles appear to be of better quality, leather framed, and judging by the lens size offer a better field of vision especially periphally
As a B-17 flight engineer, my uncle picked up a set of RAF googles and used them for most of his 25 missions with the 303rd and the 482nd BG’s.
Did he happen to say why he prefered the RAG goggles?
Unrelated. However, the RAF had Flying boots that were widely preferred over the USAAF standard issue flying boots.
It’s just a matter of personal taste, that’s all.
