Hey everyone, just found this forum and I thought I’d post pics of my latest model.
I’ve planned building a US v Wehrmacht diorama, I’ve already built M8 greyhound and now I have this GMC truck finished.
Now, while I’m really satisfied with the result, I’M NEVER BUILDING ANY OTHER AIRFIX KIT EVER AGAIN!!!
Okay, I’m done shouting, but geezus christ that was a challenge. Parts not matching, half of the pieces had been so moulded into plastic I felt like I’ve been carving them out of stone. Instruction that makes no sense, down to the point they managed to put few pieces under the same number. I could have finished half a dozen of Revell/Italeri kits with the time I’ve spent on this one, but oh well - it’s been fun all the same.
As it’s expected, there’ve been none of the truck accessories included - so I’ve scratch-built bags from Fimo clay, and used beading wire for truck rope. Then I cannibalized one of Italeri soldiers to make a machine gunner (I plan on making my diorama very Spielberg-ish, so I decided to make a start with this model).
There’s something wrong with my camera, so some parts are out of focus. I’ve spent ages getting “US ARMY 2nd Cavl.” painting on the hood-mounted bag, and I could never get a close up of that - but this gives a general idea -
First of all [#welcome] to the forums, Mish Dorian Apryl!!
Secondly, I think you did an overall fine job on this GMC truck. I don’t usually see alot of shot figures(soliders) on armor, so that makes it unique. [:)]
But I feel that your model could be improved immensly if their wasn’t so much gloss. The entire model seems to have a layer of gloss everywhere, perhaps that was the camera or lighting, or maybe you have yet to dull it down. If you get rid of the gloss, your build will look much better, but that’s only my opinion.
First of all, you kick butt for having Cameron Phillips in your avatar, dude ! Love the show, and totally love Summer Glau.
On topic, the gloss is the camera. Not only I used Q-tips dripped in Humbrol cement and brushed the model, to give it an uneven finish, I’ve also sandpapered the whole model after basic overcoat. The model looks matt as a cloth, but my camera begs to differ . Unless there are other methods to dull it down?
Nice to meet a fellow TSCC fan, who also appreciates Summer.[8D]
For removing the gloss on a model, you could try dullcoat, or some other matte finish. Dullcoat, you gotta spray with an airbrush, but their are some spray cans of matte finish avaiable at local stores. Personally I don’t use dullcoat, so I can’t recommend it. But perhaps some other folks on this forum have advice.
TSCC is definately the best show on TV right now. I’ll be gutted if FOX cancels it because of stupid Neilson ratings (I mean, it’s a sci-fi show for f’s sake. Everyone just either watches it online or torrents it).
So well, we sell Games Workshop satin/matt spray cans. I might try that, or better save for something like Nikon D80.
Anything else about the model? I’ve been making/painting clay miniatures for some time, but it’s only the third model I’ve ever done so far. I didn’t want to weather it too much, coz I want to keep “continuity” with my diorama (meaning I’ll weather all models in the end, after the scenery is done). Besides, I used this picture as a reference, and the truck looks in a pretty decent condition -
