Getting Started

How do those of you who do dioramas get started? What is your criteria? What are your thought processes? I saw the recent article in FSM but am looking for more information? Do you plan a diorama around the vehicle or do the plan the vehicle around the scenary? What is the best plan of attack. I have never done a dio and now that I am getting into tanks and what not I think the time has come to explore this side of the hobby. I already have a few bases I can use that I have been saving so that is not a problem. I will check this thread again on Saturday and then next week. Thanks to all who read or respond.

I usually start due to an obsessive nature; I wanna make a totally real looking tree or I wanna make totally real looking grass or road or hedgrow…

… that will meet up at some point with a kit that I wanna build.

Looking through books of war photos will get me thinking. As will watching movies. It will make me focus on a subject matter, aided by visuals, and my kits will take over from there.

If you’ve got a piece already made- some armor for instance- think about where it would be. Where do the markings suggest it might belong? Russia? Italy? Iraq? Go with it, put some figures together and slap one out[:D] Take lots of pics and show 'em to us.

I read alot of books on the second and first world war. My latest dioramas have come from ideas I read and just build up a picture in my mind. I then started researching the subjects. That’s when i found pictures, alot on the internet, others in books. I then plan on buying that “one kit” that I’ll base my diorama on and plan on the rest coming from my spares box. But it doesn’t normally work that way, because I see those other two or three figure sets, some detail sets and then I’m off. That’s when the diorama started changing in design and I get other ideas of things to add and new things to try.

I normally wait until I have collected most of the things I want to have before I start building. During the building process, it always changes a little. Sometimes I go way overboard and the diorama takes too long. I then lose interest and start building something easy. I normally work my way back again quickly.

One of the dios I am building is a scene from the movie “Iron Cross”. I told myself - “build it exactly how it looks in that split second”. So far the tank is done" the ground work is planned and I’m stuck on the figures because I just can’t find the right pose! Guess I’ll just go shopping!

Good luck!
