German tank periscopes

I’m building a Panther G and am having trouble finding the right color for the periscopes. With the hatches shut I’m thinking they would be dark anyway.
With that in mind I usually paint them semi-gloss black.
I’ve spent a lot of time on the net trying to find this (as I usually do) and I’m coming to the forum after doing a lot of “no result” grunt work.
Anyone out there with a website or something? I’m doing some extreme work on this model and I want it right.

I think a semi-gloss to gloss black would suffice. I’d think from a short distance away from the tank all you would see is the glass surface. If all hatches were closed I’d seriously doubt there would be any light sneaking out via the periscope lense anyway.

Black can be a little too stark for the scale effect. Add a little white to get a dark grey.

Personally, I use very dark window tint film on mine. The tint can be obtained as a “sample” from almost any tinting service and one piece will last a long time. You can cut it to the perfect rectangle shape, add a little water to the kit scope face and then attach the film. The adhesive backing is soluble and will hold the film in place. Far easier than trying to keep the paint straight and perfectly rectangular.

Thank you both for your replies. The dark window tint film is a good idea.
Just out of curiosity… does anyone know what the actual color was?

The blocks are actually clear. But, the light and the shield over them usually cast them in shadow, so gloss black or window tint is the way to go.

Makes sense. Now I got all I need to know.
Thanks guys.
