Ive been reading “Armor Battle of The Waffen SS” and once in a while it will talk about the recon company following or leadin in a attack. My question is what kind of vechiles would they use say during 1944 in france?
panzer III or whatever the battalion brought with them, and other detachments from WH, luchs for example.
Possibly the Sd.Kfz.234/4 (8 rad) and Sd.Kfz.234/2 Puma. But then again I’m not 100% sure.
In '44 Normandy probably the bulk of their vehicles was the sdkfz 250, kubels and an assortment of armored cars…
I believe Manny is right. The Waffen-SS recon units typically captured in archive photo’s on the western front are equiped with 250 (N.A) series, kubels, schwimwagens, 234 series cars, and maybe some remaining 222/223 series light armored cars. Later in the war the LAH, Das Reich and HJ divisions tended to get priority for new model vehicles as they passed on their older model vehicles to Whermacht Heer units being re-constituted.
Some units would also have had 251’s, including the 251/9 which i believe was mainly built for the reccon units to provide close support.
Best way to find that kind of information is to pick a particular unit and then start researching their Orders of Battle…
