German On Rail

Not a new page, just a review of some of my German armors & artillery on rail. The shelf is 2.90 m long, now it has second row at the back. Most pieces seen here were built by “Art Instructor” :

does “art instructor” build kits for you? Im a little unsure…

Yes, he’s been building for me for 6-7 years now. Most models seen here are his work.

ahh ok, got it…

How many kits do you estimate you have? it must be hundreds

David

Not hundreds but thousands. No estimation is needed because I keep record of all my purchase. Today I bought 6 kits and I updated the record, ending up with 1,689 Land (armors, figures, dio scenes), 396 Air and 117 Sea models, totalling 2,202 kits bought so far (a few hundreds still unbuilt).

What I bought today you might wonder. OK, here’s the list : 1. Tamiya’s Kubelwagen European Theatre 1:16, 2. Tamiya’s Zero Fighter 1:32, 3. Tamiya’s Tiger I Ausf.E w/ metal tracks & alum. gun barrel 1:35, 4. Tamiya’s MiG-15 Bis 1:48 Clear Edition, 5. Tamiya’s Fw-190 1:48, 6. Dragon’s Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.E ‘Vorpanzer’ 1:35. And since I use a motorbike, I couldn’t carry all kits home. So I took No. 3, 4 and 6 home with me and left the rest at the hobby shop for later trip.

Hey, Maniac. Do you ever build any kits? You must build some from time to time. Anyway, those are nice builds by Art Instructor. Nice collection.

Hi m60a3, thanks for your kind comments. I built hundreds of kits in the past - armors, planes and ships - though many of them were later re-painted by “Art Instructor”. I myself have no modeling talent at all, so it’s good to have someone else build them for me.

That art instructor guy must have the greatest job in the world. You buy the kits and pay him to put them together for you. Are you his only customer, or does he do this for several people?

Greatest job in the world? Yes, in the sense that he gets to do what he loves to do. But not so in the sense of pay. After these much builds for me, you still think he has the time to build for others?

Do you display this collection in a museum? Do you charge admission? Or are you just financially well off and can afford this beatiful collection? If you are well off, why don’t you throw in a few more bahts (or whatever Thai money is called now) and help the guy out?

Good question.

subfixer, I display them in my room, at the side of my house and in the new show room. I named it “Military Models Museum”, but I’ve never charged any admission fee and I never will. Same as my site, it generates no income at all but I have to pay about $250 annually for 500MB webspace. I’m not financially well off, I’m just a salary man. I don’t even have a car, I ride a offroad bike. Art Instructor never has a house of his own. Earlier this year he asked whether I’ll have modeling jobs for him for 10 more years so that he could buy a townhouse and pay it off in 10 years. I said yes (even though I’ll retire in 5 years’ time) and I ended up borrowing 1 M+ Baht from a bank to buy 2-storey 128 sq.m town house for him in May which he’s been paying 13,000 Baht monthly installments. When he pays it all off I’ll transfer the land and townhouse to him (I gave him a contract ensuring him of such free-of-charge transfer even though he didn’t ask for one). That’s how I’m helping him out. Apart from that I’ve given him soft loans (no interest) for many times, to pay for his second-handed Hyundai car, house decoration, medical expenses, etc. The remaining balance is 6 digits. I don’t think you could ask anything more from me… The townhouse is stylish and lovely, wish I could provide some pics. I’ve been thinking of writing an article on “Visiting AI’s House” with some pics of his workbench and townhouse. Anyone interested to read please raise your hands…

[tup] Way to go, Maniac!

Fair enough, I am satisfied with that and I am glad that Art Instructor has a means to pursue his hobby. It would be a shame to let that talent go to waste. Well done.

Nice to see that you and AI both benefit from your arrangment [:)]

Thanks for your kind comments! Now I’m uploading a new page, please stay tuned…
