German IR systems--what color?

Hi guys

A quick question, if anyone can answer it?

I’m trying to finish my E-100 with an IR unit on it, and am wondering, does anyne know the correct colors to paint the two apertures on the IR unit?

Specifically the end of the “scope”, and second, the big light?

I have seen them painted in all kinds of combinations, from black to silver to red–anybody have a definitive color reference or opinion?

The replica equipment mounted on the Panther G at Koblenz has a dark blue lens, as does a photo I lifted off a German forum of a real FG 1250 IR searchlight. I’d post the photo, but it is copyrighted and I don’t want to run afoul of the owner. The forum page does not appear to still exist, as I’ve looked and can’t find it. The illustration on this page shows the searchlight as red, the scope as blue…this is also where I found the photo of the real FG 1250, but it is nowhere to be found now. It makes me wonder why they show the searchlight as being red when they had a photo of the real thing in blue? Someone’s not paying attention. [zzz]

I’ve seen all sorts of colors used on models…

Thanks, Kykeon! That site was a good reference to use! I also managed to google up some photos of the Panther G at Koblenz with that funny blue lense–hmm, that’s certainy contrary to every modeler’s interpretation that I’ve seen so far!

The weird thing is. the illustration for the unit has a dark red lense. I guess I’ll have to make a judgement call…

One source DID say that the unit used a “black spot” (meaning the spot light?) so I would guess that the ark blue light would probably be closer to truth-although “red” sure looks prettier! [:X]

Hey doog, I’m pretty sure I have what you need. I’ll check my references tonight when I get home from work.

Cheers

I have read that the IR set-up on the Koblenz Panther is totally bogus, especially the lenses. That said, it does not explain the photo I have of a FG 1250 searchlight, not mounted on anything, with a blue lens.

That would be great darson! I’d appreciate that! [swg]

Kykeon, that’s interesting; I think I’ll go with a blue lense if darson’s evidence agrees with it.

Persistence pays off. [party]

Here is the original ML thread that I couldn’t find;

http://www.network54.com/Forum/47207/thread/1195093006/German+%26quot%3BIr%26quot%3B+lens+colour

This still has most of the photos attached, including the one I snagged of the original FG 1250 equipment…with the blue searchlight lens. As noted by the guy who posted the photo, it appears much bluer in the photo due to the flash, he notes it appears a very dark blue-black in normal light.

Too bad ML’s search engine is such a piece…I had to find this the hard way.

DOOG!

Steve; An interesting thread on IR, but no mention of a FG 1250, which is the object in question. If you look at the link I posted above, you’ll see that a photo of the real thing defies conventional thought on it’s appearance.

I’d go with the dark red myself.

Soory Doog, but the stuff I’ve got are all black & white photos or drawings

YOU’RE DA BOMB Kykeon! [#toast][yeah] That’s exactly what I was looking for!

I agree, it’s weird how you always see these portrayed with red lenses, but upon close examination, they seem to be without question of a blackish-blue tint. I will go with that I guess then.

Thanks for all the info guys! [:D]

Try painting it flat black with a coat of clear red, closetest I’ve ever found to matching the real one’s I dealt with

granddadjohn, are you sayin that you actually have experience with German IR units?

What’s you basis for suggesting a red tint? I just painted mine wth blue oil over black—D’OH! Can you tell me that you’ve actually seen the German IR units for real?

Not German WW II, more modern stuff. Infrared deals in the RED range of colors

Look at the photo in the link I posted and tell me the lens is RED…

You can trust a photo or vets that have worked with the real thing, your choice

Photos of the actual object in question, or the word someone who worked on something similar, in a different war, on a different generation of equipment, of a different design, by a different manufacturer, your choice…

You guy’s are good, you did something even Einstein couldn’t do and change the laws of psyhics and move infared into the ultraviolet wave range

Ohhhh-Kay guys…I made a decision, however imperfect—the model’s been painted, it’s on the shelf, it wasn’t a game of “favorites” or “smarter-vs-dumber” or anything. [sigh]

I thank you BOTH sincerely for your input!!! [:)] Please, lets move on form the subject! [:D]
