I just bought two kits: Tasca’s new PzKpfw II Luchs and a very old Tamiya Panzer Mk III M/N. I’ve heard from many that the Luchs is an outstanding kit…which is why I had to pay $48 for it! On the other end of the spectrum however is the old Tamiya Panzer Mk III. Has anyone heard of this kit or perhaps built it? Will I need to spend triple what I paid for it buying a PE set for it?
I have built the old Tamiya panzer III and the new panzer III. I don’t know if any p/e sets are still available for the old kit, but Tamiya makes engine deck grills for the new kit. They might fit on the older kit. Eduard should have a p/e set for the new kit, some of the stuff might fit on the older panzer III. The older kit isn’t bad, it just needs some tlc to make it look really good. The Luchs is an outstanding kit, no shortcomings that I can see.
If only to show you how things have changed in the last 30 years.
It has molded on details on the hull like the tow cables and other things. The gun barrel was not round and I think it had a injector mark on it that would need to be filled and sanded. The whole kit gives a great indication of just how much technology has passed it by.
I have one half built that I want to use to try some scratchbuilding on and see what kind of decent model I can produce without any aftermarket parts.
No way in hell would I buy and AM parts for it. Not worth my money.
Having said that I have a soft spot for these old kits and love the challenge to build a half decent model from whats given to me.
I just finished the old Walker Bulldog kit and I think it looks great. Not a show stopper but I am happy with it.
