The other day during a discussion between some armor modellers, a [banghead]lively debate was started on on what color the Germans’ painted the interior of their inclosed armor vehicles. I have always painted mine a flat white due to a reference I have, others in the discussion said the color ranges from white to a tan color.
I am interested in coments from other armor modellers on this subject.
My knoledge of German armour is very limited but the last time I was at Bovington I was speeking to one of the engineers about British interiours and the conversation got around to German interiours.
From what I learned most were painted in an off white,we use the RAL code range at work and the closest I’v come to the colours the guy mentioned is RAL 9001 and RAL 9002 which are cream and grey white.
Like I say I’m no expert but have recently got into building German armour and from my research the above seems to be right.

Oh if only I had access to Museum like Bovington, unfortunately here in South Australia there is nothing like it.

Here is a small discussion on German painting practices;
Hi South Aussie.I’m not The Sage of wisdom as so many of the real smart people on this forum.But I’v asked that question,back when I started asking que’s instead of just reading it,I was told to use The Model Master enamel paint called [ obviuosly ] " Panzer interior buff ".So obvious.Since MM. paint is by testors,I’d think you’ll have no trouble getting it,certainly on-line.I’m sure Model Master has it in acrylic as well.It’s Basicly buff,with yellow tinge. Yes they do have it in Acrylic. It’s like a creamy tannish white.
I cheated and used FS 33613, “Radome Tan”, for the interior of my Pzkpfw IV.

Rudedog; Its been very difficult to obtain Model Master paints here in Australia lately, [?]don’t know why, but I should be able to trace an equivalent in another brand thats available here.

“Panzer buff” is the correct color for a NEW vehicle, but with wear and tear it alost approximates testor’s flat gull gray or a dirty white.
bob36281; Thanks for feedback, I would also imagine that the light color would also become stained from gasses escaping from the breach of the gun. When you really think about a light color would really not be the best on the insides of a tank.

All depends on perspective…if trying to keep the interior a “clean” color, probably not the best…but for fully enclosed vehices it helps enhance the ambient light/visibility for the crews as opposed to a dark interior, especially since most didn’t have any sort of interior lighting system.
